How to Stretch Your Gas Dollars

Getting Through the Gas Crisis

Janet Hunt
With gas prices soaring over the country, Americans are digging deep in their pockets to afford transportation costs. Recent estimates from the Energy Information administration put the cost of a gallon of gas anywhere from $3.57 to $3.91 per gallon.

There are a number of ways a consumer can stretch gas dollars in this gas crisis. Number one is to shop around for gas. Research gas prices online. Most of the online research sites are free and request no personal information to access information. Try the automobile club websites and GasBuddy.com , which lists gas prices by state and county.

Using common sense and thriftiness may also go a long way towards stretching your gas dollars. Car pooling and downsizing to one car per family may be a necessary option. Plan your trips carefully. Make a list of all activities and errands for the day and plan the shortest route possible. Buy your groceries in bulk, so fewer trips are necessary. For short distances, take a walk. It will save money and give you some needed exercise.

You may want to consider trading in that SUV or truck for a more fuel-efficient car. Even if you decide to keep your current vehicle, there are still ways to save at the gas pump. Slow down! Drive at the speed limit of 55 mph. For most modern vehicles, you are adding an extra 5 mpg by increasing your highway speed to 65 mph. Going faster takes more fuel to power your car. You should also know that buying premium fuel for a car designed to run on regular will not improve engine performance.

Staying on top of car maintenance will help to improve your gas mileage. Keeping your tires inflated saves gas by promoting better car handling and a smoother ride. Keeping your oil changed regularly and making sure the engine is tuned up as need can save you as much as 4% on gas mileage according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
