How Students Can Excel in Giant College Classes

Todd Hicks
You are nervous. You are about to start attending college for the first time ever. As you are probably aware, the courses in the universities are a lot harder than the ones in high school.

You will have courses of different subjects and classes of different sizes. In addition to doing well in your small classes, you can do well in the large ones if you take the right steps. You will learn how to excel in large college classes.

First Step: It is important to relax. You will help yourself by staying calm and keeping in mind that having a big class does not have to be frightening.

Second Step: It is a good idea to sit in one of the front rows. By doing this, you will have an easier time hearing everything the professor says and make it easier for him or her to see you raise your hand to ask a question.

Third Step: You must make sure the teacher hears you clearly when you speak. If you are sitting in the middle or the back of the room and you are called on, it is especially important for you to speak loudly.

Fourth Step: You must be patient when raising your hand to talk. The further back you are from the front, the longer it will take the professor to notice you. The key is to not give up.

Fifth Step: It will be especially critical for you to listen intensely to everything that is said. When you are in a big class, you have less opportunity to ask questions and catch up on anything you miss.

Sixth Step: You must make an attempt to get an edge in regard to easily catching the entire lecture. A good way to do this is to use a quality tape recorder.

Seventh Step: You should not expect to be able to get a response each time you have a question. You can counter this by making a list of the questions you cannot ask now to discuss with the teacher after class is over.

Eighth Step: It is unlikely you will always be able to talk with the professor before or after class, especially if other students are waiting ahead of you to do this. One way to get around this is to talk with your teacher during his or her office hours.

Follow these steps to excel in a large college class!
