How to Get Students to Be Lifelong Learners

Encouraging young people to be lifelong learners is a goal that should not only be on the minds of teachers but parents as well. Whenever a child shows an interest in any subject they should be encouraged to look into it further and find out all that they can about it. We are living in an age of information and it can be accessed at lightning fast speeds. Children need to be encouraged to learn all that they can and continue to utilize this flow of information throughout their lives. As humanity progresses, so does they way in which information is processed and used to shape society. If the children of today can be taught to appreciate what this means for the human race then their future will surely be a bright one.

The most effective way to capture the interest of young students is to stimulate their imagination and creativity from a young age. Parents should watch for signs of what inspires their children to learn. They can then encourage that behavior by stimulating their imagination and giving them positive reinforcement. It is through this motivation of imagination and creativity that intelligence and the desire to learn is cultivated. Children should be given an environment conducive to learning in a way that captures their interests and encourages their natural curiosity about the universe and how things work.

No one should ever impose an assumed limitation upon another's ability or interest to learn. This is one of the worst things that any parent or teacher can ever do to young person. Any kind of negative reinforcement that encourages a mindset of inferiority or scarcity of intellect is ultimately damaging and should be avoided at all costs. It is not for one person to judge the ultimate potential of another individual. Every individual has the right to set and decide their own limitations. Whether a child is struggling with a subject or multiple subjects they should be given words of encouragement and they should, in a positive way, be made aware of the subjects in which they do excel. If a student only shows interest in a certain subject in particular then they should be helped to realize how the other subjects are related to their area of interest. It is very important to teach students about the interrelatedness of things in order for them to have a clearer perspective of the world in which they live. This holistic approach not only encourages the continuation of learning, but it also helps to increase awareness.

Another way to encourage lifelong learning is through hands-on experiences. Children should be given the opportunity to experience things related to their fields of interest first-hand. If their passion is music they should be given an instrument to play. If they like art they should be given the materials that they need to create their own art. This is one of the strongest forms of positive reinforcement. Not only does it give the student a sense of pride and accomplishment but it also speaks to their heart. It lets them know that someone believes in them and wants them to succeed.

Finally, students should be taught that they have value as an individual regardless of their interests or dreams. They should know that, regardless of what their aspirations and dreams may be, they are they are loved and appreciated for being the unique individuals that they are now. Remember that if learning is a rewarding experience for them now, then they will take all of these positive learning experiences with them into adulthood and continue to love and appreciate learning for the rest of their lives.
