In an attempt to share the mindset of homeschoolers so our methods can be of use to pubic school families, I began to ponder on the many things that homeschoolers approach from a different viewpoint. In this article, would like to discuss how to learn Anatomy like a homeschooler.
My homeschooled children learned Anatomy in one day, and so did I. We toured the Bodies: The Exhibition, in Atlanta. The exhibition tours the United States, with a similar Exhibition, Bodyworlds, touring the world. It is not difficult to find a showing of this exhibition.
Anatomy was not learned miraculously in one day, we did need to prepare. You can prepare to see the exhibition in several ways. First, the exhibition website provide lesson plans that can be used to prepare for and be used during and after after seeing the display. You can read age appropriate anatomy books with your child, and you can and should also discuss the use of real bodies for this science exhibition. It's not for everyone.
Go prepared to spend a full day in the exhibit. Take your time, read the plaques, and as many questions as you can. Bring a notebook, or a sketchbook to draw and write down things you want to remember. Spend $5.00 on the audio guide to give you even more information. At the end of the day, discuss the exhibit with your kids, and continue discussing it long afterwards.
Follow up after the exhibit by reviewing 3D anatomy books that you can purchase online or from the museum store.
If viewing the Bodies Exhibition, is not something you can see yourself doing, don't despair. This is just one example of ways you can learn anatomy, especially if you are struggling with it in school. There are many instructional websites and videos you can use to help you clearly see the parts of the body in full detail. The Get Body Smart Website is one such tool. Anatomy knowledge practice games can also be utilized to drill facts about the body.
In summation, a homeschooler would use as many visual and tactile aids as possible to learn anatomy. Search online resources and exhibitions near you to if you or your children are struggling to learn anatomy.
