How to Study for the CDL HAZMAT Test

Hazardous materials pose a threat to motorists on the public roads and highways. The U.S. Department of Transportation seeks to protect the public by requiring a special HAZMAT endorsement for all CDL drivers. Each state that issues a CDL license must administer a CDL HAZMAT test to drivers planning to haul certain hazardous materials. Drivers interested in getting the CDL HAZMAT endorsement can use a state CDL manual. They can also utilize several HAZMAT practice tests to prepare for the CDL HAZMAT test. Professional CDL truck driving schools also provide hands-on training for the HAZMAT skills test.

Step 1:

Obtain the CDL manual for the state where you are seeking a CDL license. For example, Texas offers its commercial driver's license manual online (see Sources). You may also visit your local driver's license office to get a copy of the state CDL manual. Each state's CDL manual has study information for the CDL hazardous materials test.

Step 2:

Use the CDL manual to begin studying for your CDL HAZMAT test. You will first have to take a written CDL hazardous materials test. Study the manual until you feel like you have absorbed all the material.

Step 3:

The Professional Truck Driver Institute provides certification for truck driver training courses. These schools often charge several thousand dollars. If you have already had a CDL license and just want to study for the HAZMAT endorsement, it may be better to just ask a colleague or employer for some pointers on taking the CDL skills test. However, if you are in the process of getting your first CDL license, a truck driving school can go a long way in giving you the hands-on experience to pass the skills test.
