How to Study Effectively

Knowing how to study effectively is very important, and can be very easy. Most people think that they know how to study the right way, but what is the right way? There are many different ways to study, and choosing the best way for you is important. To make studying effective make sure you know what to study, the best studying method for your learning style, and how long you need to study.

Very often people do poorly on exams or tests, simply because they do not know what to study. Teachers will usually inform you of what will be covered on the examination. Make sure that when a professor is lecturing, or when reading from a text that you take proper notes. Decide what information is important, and what information might be what I like to call "filler".

Often textbooks will emphasize on important facts with bold, underlined, or italicized words. Also, if there is something which may be unclear, write down a few examples. Examples can be used in all subjects, not just math. Try to memorize the broad topics when you read, and then write down the facts.

There are many different correct ways to study, but it is important to find the best way for you. The most effective way I have learned to determine your best study methods is to find out your learning style. There are three different learning styles. The first is a "Visual learner" people who learn best by seeing things or picturing things in their mind. A few ways to tell if you are a visual learner is if you like to see charts or diagrams to explain things, when trying to spell a word do you visualize it in your head, or do you remember peoples faces instead of their names. The second is an "Auditory learner", or people who learn best by hearing things. You may be an auditory learner if you prefer listening to a lecture over reading, would rather listen to a book on tape than read, or when trying to spell a word you sound it out. The third is a "Kinesthetic learner" or basically a hands on person. Kinesthetic learners would rather build a table than read a book about building one, or when in science class you would rather physically perform the lab than write about it.

Knowing your learning style can not only help you study better, but also may limit the time you have to study. I am not saying that studying less is better, but if you study more effectively it should take less time. However, you could study the same amount of time and absorb that much more information. That part is up to you. If you know that you do not know enough about a topic as you should, then study it more than any other. It is better to begin studying after you have gone over all the information, but at least a week prior to the test. Studying in advance is not only more effective, but also you can study a set amount of time each day instead of cramming it in at the last minute. It is important that you first learn the information, then study it.

Everyone dreads having to study for an exam, but it does not have to be as horrible as you think it will be. Not one person is the same, and so you should not study the same. Remember that it is important to know the best way for you to study, make sure you know what to study, and figure out a good study schedule for you.
