How to Study Effectively for an Exam

Tips on How to Excel on an Exam

Thomas West
Preparing for an exam is one of the most stressful parts of college life, requiring a great deal of attention to detail and a great deal of work. However, there are a number of skills and techniques that you can employ to ensure that you are studying in the most beneficial ways, and to ensure that you get the best possible grade that you can on your exam.

Studying for an exam should not occur the night before an exam is due. Instead, undertake studying the material throughout the time leading up to the test itself, thus ensuring that you are not completely overwhelmed when the time finally comes to study. There are a number of ways to undertake this process, including taking good notes on the readings and lecture material, recording the lecture/discussion and reviewing it after class, and highlighting important passages in the reading you are going to study.

Flash cards are without a doubt one of the most effective study methods available, and they are especially useful for exams that are multiple choice or require short essays (although they can also be used for exams that require you to write longer pieces as well.) Flash cards force you to recall facts and put together information in such a way that you can easily command it when it comes time for the exam.

Along with using flashcards, studying with a group can often be beneficial. Working with someone else helps you both by allowing each of you to help the others with problems and weak points, while also allowing you to utilize your strengths to the best effect. Be aware, however, that it's very easy to get distracted during a group study session and to spend more time goofing off than actually studying, so be sure to stay as focused as possible during your group study session.

Be sure to choose an study environment that is conducive to concentration and that has as few distractions as possible. Your dorm or apartment is generally not the best place for studying, as it often presents you with too many temptations to get distracted. If possible, go to the library at school or to some other study center to ensure that you are in the best environment for studying. If you have to stay at home, try to minimize the number of distractions by shutting off the computer and television, as well as any video game consoles that you might possess.

Finally, get plenty of sleep the night before the exam. Research has shown that you absorb more knowledge if you get a good night's sleep after an intense bout of studying, so be sure not to give in to the temptation of pulling an all-nighter.

If you follow these simple instructions, you're sure to both have a more positive studying experience and to excel on any exam. When you ace it, you'll be glad that you started early, stayed focused, and employed these methods for undertaking effective studying for an exam.
