How to Make Stuffing from Scratch

Dee Davis
It's easy to make stuffing for chicken or as a side dish. I enjoy making stuffing from scratch because I can add my own personal touch to it and also season to taste. Moreover, there is that feeling of accomplishment, because it's your own creation.

Things You'll Need:

  • 5 slices wheat bread toasted (any kind of bread will do)
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 rosemary
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh parsley
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 pound ground meat (chicken, turkey or beef)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp seasoning salt
  • 2 cubes chicken bouillon mix

Instructions:

Step 1: Preheat pan on medium heat. Then pour 1 cup water and 2 cubes in pan and let melt. Then add 2 tablespoons margarine, olive oil, onions, and garlic and let simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place 5 slices of wheat bread in oven and let it bake for 10-15 minutes or until light brown.

Step 3: Meanwhile boil hot water on medium high heat.

Step 4: Then remove and cut into 1 inch cubes (or squares). Then add baked bread cubes to sauce mixture in pan and stir until bread is completely covered in sauce. Transfer stuffing into medium sized bowl, add 1/2 cup hot water, season to taste and set aside.

Step 5: Pre-heat frying pan on medium heat. Meanwhile, season the ground meat with seasoning salt. Then put seasoned meat in frying pan and cook. Stir consistently to avoid lumping. Do not over cook. Remove frying pan from stove after 8 to 10 minutes while ground meat is medium done, and set aside.

Step 6: Add ground meat to stuffing and stir mixture until uniform.

Step 7: If baking on its own, spray bottom of corning ware or baking pan with Pam, then fold stuffing into baking pan, cover and let cook for 25 minutes. Remove and then serve. Bonne appetite!

Tips & Warnings

  • 1. Season to taste.
  • 2. Add your favorite herbs and spices.
  • 3. Do not over cook ground meat if you are using stuffing to stuff turkey or chicken.
  • 4. Stuffing can be served with mashed potatoes, rice or corn bread (muffins).
  • 5. If you want to be really creative, you can add partially cooked rice to stuffing in step 5.
