How to Style a Glamorous Pin-Up Girl Pompadour

Christine Bude Nyholm
The pin-up girl pompadour is a vintage look that harks back to the the Gibson Girl from of the turn of the 20th century and, later, the World War II era women of glamor. Pin-ups are pictures of attractive women that, quite simply, are intended to be pinned up and admired. The pin-up girls of the 1940's were admired on posters that often decorated the lockers of the G.I.'s who needed the diversion from the rigors of war. Popular pin-up girls of the 1940's were Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth.

The pin-up girl pompadour is a pouf on top, pulled up and back neatly. The pompadour gives the illusion of height and is a neat look, because it eliminates the messy look of loose ends. Hair styled with a pompadour can be finished in a number of styles. Once the pouf is formed, the back hair can be left loose, pulled back in to a ponytail or braid or piled on top of the head in a bun.

The all-important pouf can be styled in different ways. It pays to practice with your hair and experiment. Hair that is slippery may be more difficult to style and secure.

Styling may be easier if the hair is not freshly washed, even a little dirty. If hair is fine you might use some styling product, such as style gel or mousse, to hold the air and give it body. It may help to curl the hair into soft waves before styling, especially if the back hair is going to be left loose.

One way to style the pompadour is to bend over at the waist and brush the hair forward with a natural bristle brush. This gives the hair body and lift. Once the hair is brushed out you can toss the head back. Part the hair from ear to ear and pull the top section forward. If the hair is long enough you can simple twist the hair and pull it back and secure it with hairpins to hold the hair forward. The front hairs will be secured neatly off the face.

Shorter hair may need the help of backcombing, After brushing the hair forward divide the hair into three sections. The back section can be styled after the pouf is formed. The middle section goes from approximately the temple area to the ears. Pin or clip the front section to the side while working with the middle section. Use a comb, or rat comb, to backcomb the hair. Some mousse, gel or hairspray can give the hair some hold and volume. After the middle section is backcombed secure it into a pouf, or pillow. Next smooth out the front section with a comb and pull it over the pouf. Pin the front section over the middle section and secure it with pins, pushing the hair forward as you push in the pins. After the front is styled, you can pull the back hair back into a ponytail or bun or leave it loose.

Once the pin-up girl pompadour is styled the hair is fairly carefree. The hair is styled neatly, looks great and you are ready to wow the world.
