First you need to have goals regarding your weight loss efforts. They should be specific, measurable and easy to reach. For tips on setting weight loss goals, check out Kathleen Doheny's article on WebMD, Setting Realistic Weight Loss Goals.
Measures of success. To succeed at weight loss goals, you need a way to track your progress on a goal. If you are tracking pounds, keep a chart on how much you have lost over a certain period of time. If you are only allowing yourself a treat twice a week, you need to record the days you have indulged and those you haven't. Seeing how well you are sticking with a goal can help you succeed or decide to alter your goal so that it can be reached.
Breaking up goals. If your goals are too big to meet over the short term, you may want to break them into smaller more reachable goals. It is hard to stick with a goal if it takes a long time to accomplish. It is easier to succeed at smaller weight loss goals over a shorter time period. This will help you stick with overall goals. It is important to have both long-term and short-term goals when losing weight for the best chances at success.
Reward the little milestones. Reward yourself for each small goal you succeed at. Looking forward to a non-food related reward will keep you motivated. The more rewards you allow yourself, the more motivated you will be to sticking with your diet plan and the more successful you will be in reaching your weight loss goals.
Prepare for setbacks. If this is not one of your goals when losing weight, you can use this as a way to stick with your weight loss goals. Use this as a learning experience as what didn't work to help you in reaching your short term and long term weight loss goals.
Keep goals flexible. Although your goals should be specific and measurable, you need to remain flexible to succeed at weight loss goals for the long term. Give yourself a little leeway, especially if you find that you may have set a goal too high. Adjusting a goal is better than giving up.
Not meeting a goal does not equal failure. If you find that you can't meet a goal even if you are trying, perhaps that specific goal will not work for you at this time. This does not mean you failed and will not reach your long-term weight loss goals. You may want to put it further on down your list to try again at a later date or simply try something else for a better chance at success.
Succeeding at weight loss goals. Setting realistic goals is just the beginning. You have to find ways to stick with your plan. Using these tips and discovering your own will help you to succeed at weight loss goals.
