How to Succeed in Working from Home

Work at Home Jobs and Starting Your Own Business

Amber S.
"Work at home jobs" is one of the most widely searched phrases on the internet today. With the price of gas, many workers can no longer commute to their jobs. After having to pay both the price of gas to drive a half hour or more to work and also having to pay for childcare, many mothers can no longer afford to work at all and are turning to the internet to find jobs that allow them to work from home.

By now, most people have found that the vast majority of work-from-home jobs are scams. Once you are actually able to navigate through them and find something legitimate, there is little to no guarantee that it will work out for you. So many people have put forth their valuable time and effort into finding a job they can do from home, only to find out that the job is a bust.

Others decide to start their own business from home and put everything that they have into it only to discover months later that they made a bad choice. Either the market is flooded in that area or they chose something that does not have a high enough demand. It can be distressful to work hard and put forth precious dollars toward something that you never knew was destined to fail. It's even harder to realize after the fact that you are in a worse position than when you started.

When deciding to work from home, one of the most important things you can do to ensure success is to not put all of your eggs in one basket. If you put everything that you have into only one idea, it may end up being a flop and you could be left further behind than when you started. Instead, spread yourself out as much as you can without spreading yourself too thin. That way, you can test the water in different areas until you hit something that is both fun and profitable. Then, if you like, you can divert your time and efforts toward that goal.

For example, I am not only a writer. I make money doing several jobs from home. I am also a professional photographer, a jewelry maker, and a graphic designer. These four little jobs keep me busy and keep food on the table. If I'm having a bad week selling jewelry (one of the worst self-starter businesses as the market there is so over-saturated), I can always write articles in my spare time until things pick up again. Photography is my calling, but the pickings are slim, so I am also able to do graphic design for other work-at-home-moms in my spare time.

It is also a good idea to try and find a specific niche that needs to be filled. The market might be saturated with a specific type of business, but if you find a niche in which to advertise yourself, you may find that there are many people looking for your very specific line of work.

For example, I am a photographer, but photographers are very common. There are plenty of freelancers here as well as wedding photographers and portrait photographers. One day, a realtor came to me with a request to take designer magazine quality photos of a home she was selling. Voila! I had found my niche. Now I make part of my living shooting interiors for people trying to sell their homes or rent out their timeshares and vacation rentals. I am able to advertise to a specific clientele and because I am the only person within 100 miles or more who advertises herself as a real estate photographer, I get all of the business in that niche.

Lastly, it's important to be hard on yourself. Most people find that they cannot work from home because they are not a good self-starter. They feel that they need a boss to tell them what to do or to show them what must be done. When working from home, you will be tempted to wake up whenever you want to, get ready in your own time, and take as many breaks during the day as you like.

While it may seem fun at first, this kind of behavior will quickly ruin your chances at being successful working from home. The hardest work is in the first few months, so be sure you get up at a certain time each day, get ready, and then conduct yourself as you would on a normal work day. You'll have to be your own boss, even if it means being hard on yourself.

Working from home can be very rewarding. You can stay with your children, be your own boss, and have unlimited sick time when you are not feeling well. While the pay can be erratic, you will find after a while that you settle into a kind of rhythm and that the money starts to balance out. Keep up with it and when you find the one or two things that really work for you, you can abandon the others and put your full time and effort into the job or jobs that are the most rewarding.
