How to Be Successful at Cold Calling

Michael McNaughton
Cold calling is an art that many people do not appreciate. Prospecting and getting your voice mails returned is an art all by itself. If you're not getting the results you want, you might be making mistakes that you are not even aware of. Cold calling doesn't have to just be a numbers game. You must know what to say and how to structure a pitch properly, and then you can and will get the appointment you want.

What is cold calling, you might ask. Well, cold calling is the process of approaching a prospective customer, usually via telephone, who is not aware of the impending conversation. The word cold often refers to the person receiving a call from the salesperson that they are not expecting. But, as many people who have tried this method know, cold often describes the way people act over the phone. Some sales people think that cold calling is effective. However, many others are working to develop a great technique that they can use to be successful cold calling.

Did you know that up to 80% of all new sales and business people who fail within the first year, do so because of cold call reluctance? What you should be doing is viewing the person you're cold calling as your new best friend. That advice alone should double or triple your cold calling results. I know, you're thinking that it's not that easy. But with proper preparation, the proper mindset, and a good script, you could be on your way to mastering cold calling.

Visualizing is a great technique for cold calling. Before you make your cold call, you should pretend that you actually really like the person before you even talk to them. Convince yourself that you'll be absolutely fascinated by them. Do not think anything negative of the person and you will continue to think that this person is your new best friend. During the cold call, continually remind yourself how much you like that person and how interesting he or she is.

Another important thing to remember is timing of your cold call. Calling them when they're working or interrupting them while they're busy, of course you're getting brushed off. Prospects are sadly overwhelmed an inundated with e-mails and phone calls, voice mails and meetings they had set up. Why would anyone expect a different reaction? How do you act when telemarketers call you?

In order to be successful at cold calling, you must learn how to build relationships in order for all your sales and marketing efforts to be effective. At the end of the day, you should be feeling as if he made a bunch of new best friend. If your mindset is that you hate the people you are calling because something didn't work, then your future ventures in cold calling will not work out.
