How to Have a Successful Yard Sale

Tips for Having a Profitable Yard Sale

Yard sales are a lot of work, and you want to make sure to maximize your profits. Many people have yard sales in the United States each year. If you do not take the right steps in having your yard sale it could just be wasting your time. Here are some tips on making your yard sale as successful as you possibly can.

The first step in having a yard sale is to pick the right time and place for your sale. Many people will not come to a yard sale on a Saturday if the yard sale was running on the Friday before for example. Their reasons are simply that they feel that most of the good deals have been picked over, and it would not be worth their time to stop. It is best to have your yard sale on a Saturday only. Having your yard sale on a Saturday will bring you the most traffic, because most people are off on the weekends, and Sunday is out, because people attend church in the mornings.

Schedule your yard sale around holidays such as Father's Day, Mother's Day, etc... Many people have already made plans for these occasions and will be unable to attend your sale. Watch the weather and make sure the forecast predicts a beautiful day. The nicer the weather the more likely people will want to be out and about, and going to yard sales.

Pricing items is key to selling them. Many yard sales fail to price every item, and you must realize that if the items are not marked some people will not ask you what the price is. Your customers should be able to see the price tag clearly, without having to ask you what it is. When you start pricing your items, you must remember that you are probably not going to even get half of what you paid for clothing items that are not new.

Keeping your prices low will enable you to sell more items, and help get the clutter out of your home. If you have items that you are dead set on getting a certain amount of money out of, put "FIRM" on the price tag. Many people have a hard time saying no to those annoying yard salers that are never happy with the price you have your item selling for. Writing "FIRM" on the tag will prevent many people from even trying to haggle you to come down on the price.

Make sure to place an ad in your local newspaper. Placing an ad in your newspaper shouldn't cost you over $20 and will greatly increase your yard sales traffic. Post as many signs as possible with arrows pointing to the direction of the sale. If you live anywhere near a busy street, post at least one there, and you will be surprised how many people will stop at your sale just because they saw the sign. Make sure your signs are easy to read with bold letters that stand out. Please remember after the sale is over to take down all your signs.

The final tip I can give you is to get as many tables as you can borrow and space your items out well. Many people have yard sales and lay a blanket on the ground with their items on the blanket. No one really wants to have to bend over to see what you have, and they sure do not want to get on their hands and knees to pilfer through your things. Many people will not even stop if your things are just spread out on the ground. Take my advice and borrow some tables.
