How to Have a Successful Yard Sale

It's summer time and that means you are probably thinking of having a yard sale. Yard sales are hard work but if you do it just right it can be a very profitable venture for you. This article will go over several ways you can have a successful yard sale.

I have had several yard sales. Some have been a success and some not so much. In my opinion, timing is everything. You want to have your yard sale when there is nothing else going on in your town. I wouldn't have it the same weekend as the annual festival or a major holiday weekend.

Be organized. This takes a little more effort but you will have greater success when you are organized. When you have a box just marked $1.00 and another marked 50 cents it can be confusing trying to remember what came out of what box. Try to have clothing organized by size. Group clothing together. Men's together and women's together. Don't just pile everything on top of each other. Try to hang things up separately so people can see the item and the price easily.

I suggest try to find a friend or two who wants to have a yard sale together. The more stuff the better turn out. You can all pitch in pricing and it is always more fun.

Advertise! Advertise! Advertise! Try to advertise as much as you can. Put an ad in the local papers, put out flyers and put signs by the road. People won't come if they don't know about it. I would take advantage of email and Facebook and pass the word on about your yard sale.

Have plenty of change. I have learned this from experience. You need to have change because people tend to have $10's and 20's and will always need change. If you have a lot of $1 items or 50 cents or 25 cents definitely have plenty of ones and quarters. Be sure and never leave the cash box unattended!

Be willing to take less than what you are asking. Most avid yard sale goers will try to offer less than what you are asking. My suggestion is if you want to get rid of it then take what you can get! Of course, if it is something of value then you may not want to haggle too much, but when you can take what you can get.

Donate what you have left. I have always taken left over items to Goodwill. Make it a rule that it does not go back into your home or even your storage shed.

Most of all, have fun! Get the kids involved if they want to help. They can have a lemonade stand or offer cold water.
