Have you ever wondered how to successfully engage in overseeding your lawn? Now that the warmer months of the year are upon us, many individuals are gaining an interest in creating the most beautiful lawn possible. If your lawn has bare spots, dark colored grass that reflects brown tints more so than green tints, and/or several weeds, you may benefit from overseeding. This is a process in which you integrate new grass seed in with the grass that is already present in order to create a thick, healthy appearance of grass. In this lawn care guide, you will learn the steps to successfully engage in overseeding your lawn.

The first step involved in the process of overseeding your lawn is to set your lawn mower to the lowest setting and go over the lawn with it at least once. The goal of this step is to thin out the grass that is already in the yard, and to remove unwanted weeds that may be growing in the wild.

Once you have went over the lawn with the lawn mower, you should get a rake and make sure that all grass and weed debris has been eliminated. The lawn will need to be as clear as possible in order for the overseeding process to be successful.

The next step is to properly aerate the lawn. This basically means that you should loosen up the soil of the yard. Soil that is heavily compacted often provides a difficult environment for need seed to grow. However, if you aerate the area and loosen it up, you can place new fertilizer in the ground in order to encourage the growth of new, healthy grass. If your lawn gets a large amount of traffic on a regular basis, it is best to perform this step two to three times a year.

Once you have loosened up the soil, sprinkle the soil with compost and fertilizer. It is important to evenly distribute this all around the lawn. By adding these substances to the area, you will be able to create an ideal environment for the new grass seed that you will be applying.

Now that you have applied the compost and the fertilizer, it is time to lay the new grass seed. Simply distribute seed all over the surface of your lawn making every effort to ensure that it is distributed evenly.

Once you have applied the new grass seed to the lawn, you should get a rake and pull it through the grass in order to assist in more distribution of the grass seed. Once completed, cover the year with compost. It is best to select a compost that integrates plant food or fertilizer as this will assist in encouraging growth.

Once you have completed all of the steps required to successfully engage in the process of overseeding your lawn, place sprinklers throughout the lawn in order to provide the moisture that is needed for growth. Within just a couple of weeks, you should be able to see the growth of your brand new, healthy grass!
