How to Successfully Set and Meet Goals
Lose Weight, Get a Great Job, Improve Your Life with a Few Simple Steps
Not really. Plenty of people who seem to do everything right still have trouble meeting their goals. To successfully meet your goals, whether they are physical, mental, financial, or career related, you have to develop a plan and implement it if you hope for success.
The first step to meeting your goal, is to set a realistic, and definite goal. Too many people set vague goals, such as "I want to improve my health"", or "I want to spend more time with my family". Others may set goals that may be unattainable, simply because you are not in control of the situation, for example, "I want to publish a novel".
In all of these cases, the goals are unrealistic, in the first two because the definition of success is not clear, and in the last, because you cannot force a publishing house to buy your book. More realistic goals would be "I want to exercise three times a week", "The entire family will sit down to dinner together twice a week, and have a family game night once a week', and "I will work on my novel for five hours a week". See the difference? By setting clear goals, you know what you need to do, and how you are doing.
The next step is to fend off discouragement. It is normal to be enthusiastic when you begin your goal setting program, and it is also normal for enthusiasm to wane a few weeks in. By having your goals clearly mapped out, actually written on paper, in a place that you can see them regularly, you will improve your odds of success. Everyday, visual reminders of what you are working for will help you stay on track when your enthusiasm dims.
The final step in the goal meeting process is to keep going. It is easy to get the urge to start over when you have a bad day, but don't think of the process this way. If you are having trouble one day, no need to start over tomorrow. Take steps as soon as you realize you are off track to get back in step. Remember your goals and motivation.
The flip side of the coin is how you act when things are going well. It is easy to get too cocky, and think that you are invincible. This is a dangerous mind set as well. Just keep moving forward toward your goal, and give yourself credit for each day you meet your goals.
Once you have settled into a routine of working toward your goals, you may want to take some time to review them. Are things working the way you thought? Should you revamp your goals? It is important to make these decisions at a time when you are feeling comfortable with your progress, so that you will have an accurate base from which to make your decision.
By following these steps you will find that you are well on your way to meeting your goals and improving your life. Remember to take one day at a time, constantly review your goals, and keep visual reminders of exactly what you are working toward. All of these things will help ensure your success.
