1- Set family rules.
Successfully work from home by gaining the cooperation of your family. Ask them to respect your time; only request favors after-hours; and, to leave your workspace alone. Explain to them these three things will help you best manage the job that puts food on their plates.
2- Establish work goals.
Make a list of your daily work goals. Post them in a visible spot. Then, follow them to the 't'. Use your list as a guide; a mechanism to help you stay on track without supervision. Also, keep another list of personal goals that might distract you like maintaining the laundry. Delegate tasks associated with them to others, so you can keep your eye on the prize.
3- Create a workspace.
Successfully work from home by turning a room or corner of your home into an office. Be sure the area you select is complete with a desk, phone, computer and office supplies. An official workspace will provide you with the professional environment and tools necessary to do your job proficiently.
4- Turn off the television.
The "boob tube" has been the downfall of many hardworking people who toil from home. They start their morning with good intentions, but end the afternoon with Oprah or some other talk show. Don't be like these folks. Turn the TV off while you work. If you like the sound of noise, play a soothing CD.
5- Work during business hours.
Another key to successfully working from home is to plan your day around normal business hours.
Most businesses are open from 9 to 5. Set your sights on these hours, so you can contact clients and enlist the aide of other co-workers when necessary. Only work non-traditional hours if your tasks are not people-dependent.
6- Stay connected with co-workers.
Doing a job from home is often considered a luxury. Yet, there is another side to this type of work - isolation. The depth of a person's relationship with a co-worker can make or break a career. So, stay in touch with the people who work at the office. Meet for lunch; show up for meetings and exchange e-mail regularly. Your extra effort will cause you to build the kind of relationships that will get you that next promotion.
As you can see, working from home can be a breeze if you have a plan. Use the above suggestions and stay on top of your job regardless of how much time you spend at the office.
