Foundation
If you wear foundation normally you may find it's too heavy for summer use. Instead of your normal foundation look for a matte or powder finish foundation. Make sure that it is water proof so you are sure it will last all day long. If your foundation rubs off easily with a towel after swimming it is not water proof. Also, instead of doing your whole face with foundation just do spots, red marks, and discolored areas. You will get a much more natural look by doing small areas and blending with your natural skin tone. You should also put foundation on your eyelids and lips because it will help your makeup stay on longer.
When it comes to powder, you are probably better off skipping it during the summer. Choose a foundation that has a powder finish to acheive the look without the powder. Powder tends to cake around lines and in pores during the summer from sweat. This can look terrible, especially if you have to reapply a lot and may cause acne.
Eyes
Today, there are hundreds of kinds of waterproof mascaras and long lasting eyeshadows. Some eyeshadows are guaranteed not to crease and lots of mascaras do not run. In the long run, it is better to spend more money when it comes to your eyes. Quality mascara will not only last longer, but will be easier to wash off later than some cheaper brands. When choosing a mascara for your summer makeup routine, choose one that has a non-drying formula so your lashes can breathe. When it comes to eyeshadow it is best to stick to shimmery light colors close to your skin tone. Dark colors are not for summer, save them for the fall and winter. Try golds, browns, greens, pinks, and blues. Light summery colors can help open up the eyes and instantly make you look prettier.
You can also buy eyeshadow primer that comes in a stick or cream. Just rub the stick or cream on your eyelids and it will help your shadow stay on longer. During the summer it is best to use a liquid or gel eye liner. Make sure that it is waterproof, long lasting, and quick drying. You can smear your liner before it dries if you are looking for a less defined look. Remember that less is more, especially during the summer.
Lips
During the summer you are constantly licking your lips, sipping drinks, and eating ices. All of which make your lipstick wear off faster. During the summer you should use a 2 step lipstick and wear lip liner. Your lip liner should be the same color as your lipstick and should be applied to the outside edge of lips before applying lipstick. The liner will help the lipstick stay on your lips. Next apply the color and seal with a top coat. If you'd rather not wear lipstick on hot days lip gloss or even chapstick can help your lips look great instanty without all the fuss. Clear or lightly tinted lip gloss is always a good choice.
Cheeks
During the summer you may want to use a cream rouge instead of powder or pressed. Choose a bright, but natural color that complements your skin. Rub the cream into the apples of your cheeks and blend outdward with your fingertips. Use a dab on each temple to highlight the curve of your face, but be careful not to use too much. If you want to use bronzer to get that all over sun kissed look use a loose mineral form that uses several colors. Brush lightly over the face and neck and you are done. Now you can enjoy the pool or beach for hours and look great doing it.
