How to Make Sunflower Centerpieces for a Wedding Reception

Kristen May
If your wedding reception is outdoors and has a color palette that includes oranges and yellows, sunflowers would make great centerpieces for your wedding reception. You can make many different kids of sunflower wedding centerpieces on your own with basic supplies and knowledge.

Sunflower Wedding Centerpieces: Selecting your Flowers

Although the focal point for sunflower wedding centerpieces will obviously be the large sunflowers, there are a number of other flowers that would look good in the centerpieces as well. For example, garden flowers such as daisies would look really nice in the centerpieces, whether they are white or yellow. There are a variety of other spring wildflowers with very small blooms that would make a great backdrop in your centerpieces for the sunflowers.

If you are feeling adventurous, you could grow the sunflowers yourself in your garden, along with any other flowers you want in the centerpieces. This would be by far the most cost effective way to do things. If you would prefer, you can purchase them from a local florist, or even from an online retailer.

Sunflower Wedding Centerpieces: Vases

Because sunflowers are so large, you will need somewhat large vases to maintain the right size ratio with your flowers. If you would prefer to keep the flowers lower so they don't obstruct the view people have when they are sitting at their tables, then you could opt for shorter vases, or even consider floating the flowers in a small bowl of water on the table.

Sunflower Wedding Centerpieces: Assembly

When you assemble your own sunflower centerpieces for your wedding reception, you will want to set up an assembly line to expedite the process. On each flower you are putting in the vase, make a fresh cut on the stem so it is more likely to draw water.

You will want no more than 2-3 sunflowers in each centerpiece because the flowers are so large. Fill out the rest of the space with other smaller flowers or greenery if you would like, or leave the sunflowers on their own for simple and elegant wedding centerpieces.

Sunflower Wedding Centerpieces: Special Touches

If you want to be really creative, you could have small bowls of sunflower seeds at the tables as an appetizer, or incorporate sunflower seeds into the food you are serving (perhaps as a topping on the salad) to tie the centerpieces into the rest of the wedding reception.

Another more elegant special touch to add as you make your own sunflower wedding centerpieces is a piece of ribbon tied around the neck of the vase to make them more elegant and complete.
