How to Make a Super Why Halloween Costume for Boys

Lyn McCallister
PBS Kids hosts a popular children's television show called Super Why. Super Why is a fairytale boy named Whyatt Beanstalk. He becomes a reading superhero when he dons his Super Why costume. He leads a group of 3 other characters: Princess Presto, Alpha Pig, and Wonder Red. These characters go on missions to solve everyday problems using spelling and reading skills.

You can create your own Super Why Halloween Costume for your little boy this year. He'll stand out in a crowd of traditional superheroes with the power to read!

Supply List for Super Why Halloween Costume

Long sleeve green shirt

Green sweatpants

Green face paint*

Blue fabric paint

Yellow fabric paint

Blue cape (either purchased* or make your own)

Velcro (for making your own cape)

Yellow belt (optional)

* Toys r' Us sells a Super Why role play kit with a blue cape and mask for under $20.

How to Make a Super Why Halloween Costume

1. Purchase all the materials a few days before Halloween to allow enough time for the fabric paint to dry.

2. Use the blue fabric paint to draw a picture of a book on the front of the long sleeve green shirt.

3. Allow the blue fabric paint to dry.

4. Use the yellow fabric paint to draw 3 ovals around the book on the green shirt. You are essentially drawing Super Why's logo. See the picture for an example.

5. Allow the yellow fabric paint to dry.

6. Optional: Use the blue fabric paint to draw blue cuffs on the long sleeve green shirt. Allow to paint to dry.

7. Optional: Write the name "Super Why" above the book on the green shirt.

How to Create a SuperWhyCape

1. If you purchased a Super Why cape, skip these instructions.

2. Purchase approximately ½ yard of blue fabric.

3. Measure the cape dimensions by holding the material against your child. You do not want the cape material to trip your child so cut it slightly below the waist.

4. Optional: If you have a sewing machine, hem the edges. Otherwise, leave the edges raw.

5. Attach the Velcro pieces on either side of the top narrow hem. Be sure to fit it to your child so it is secure.

6. Use the fabric paint to draw the Super Why logo as you did for the shirt.

Paint the Super Why Face Mask

1. If you purchased a mask, skip these instructions.

2. Use the green face paint to draw the mask on your child.

3. Create the mask outline first, and then paint the interior of the mask.

4. Be careful to avoid the eye area.

Dress your child in the Super Why costume, yellow belt, cape.

Take pictures and have a great Halloween!
