Depending on where you live you can end up with mounds of snow, during the winter months. You may find that during this time it can get more difficult to get your dog out of the house to get the exercise that they need. So how can you make sure that your dog is getting the exercise that it needs during the winter time? Below you will find a few suggestions.
Some need sweaters but not all
You have probably seen some very stylish dogs walking around during the winter months with sweaters on. However not all dogs need this during the winter months. If your dog has very short hair, or no hair at all they will need a sweater during the winter season in order to keep them warm during their walk. Dogs with more hair and double coats will enjoy the winter months, without a sweater. Keep in mind that your dog is an animal and not a person. So if they have fur they already have the protection they need during the winter months.
During the winter season, your dogs paws can really get damaged from the rock salt, and the ice. The best thing to do is find a balm, that is made just for your dogs paws. There are balms that are especially made for dogs to protect the padding on their feet during the winter season. Follow the directions on how to apply the balm, and keep hair on paws trimmed so they don't get clumps of snow stuck in them. Taking care of your pets paws will ensure that they enjoy their daily walk.
A walk in the woods
If you happen to live near a wooded area, you can walk your dog through here. You will not have to worry about any chemicals on your dogs paws. You will have to make sure that you give them a good brushing when returning home, to get all of the snow out of their fur. Removing the snow as soon as you come home and drying them properly will help to keep the snow from clumping up.
Dress right
If you make sure that you are prepared for the cold you can walk your dog you will be able to endure a longer walk. Make sure you have a hat and gloves. In extremely cold weather you may need a scarf to cover your face as well.
