In such cases, it is always welcome to have a cell phone which can be used as a modem too. It will help you surf the Internet while traveling or anywhere other than your office.
Here are some things to be taken care of for your cell phone to be used as a modem.
Pre Requisites for a Cell Phone:
Check if your cell phone complies with the following:
•It should be well suited with the mobile service provider.
•It should be able to take voice calls as well as transfer data. Some latest models of cell phones have a modem built-in and can handle the dual mode of voice and data transmission. Every cell phone comes with its User Guide, which should be read thoroughly for its specifications regarding the same.
•For those phones that do not have a built-in modem, a PC card modem for your laptop can be used.
•Check whether your cell phone has a data port.
•The cell phone should be able to switch between networks fast. This is especially helpful when you are on a train or in a cab while traveling from one place to another.
Pre Requisites for the Cell Phone Provider:
You need to confirm that your provider has the following:
•The provider gives digital quality voice service.
•It provides data service.
•It has the capability of switching from digital to analog networks when digital is unavailable.
•It has no cost inter city or free local contact phone numbers country wide.
Additional Accessories Required:
Few accessories needed are:
•A data cable which is used to connect your cell phone to your laptop.
•Internet connection packages which are available with your service provider or any electronics retailer.
Internet Data Service packages:
Nowadays, some cell phone providers also sell Internet data service plans like the various Internet Service Providers. You can choose the plan according to your requirements. If you need data service as well as voice service, it costs more. You will require your service provider to start the data services on your cell phone, if you have to use it as a modem.
Will my connection be fast?
Actually, the connection using a cell phone will not have the same speed as a broadband or a Wi-Fi connection. A lot depends on whether it is analog or digital when your cell phone acts as a modem. This speed will be enough to send and receive emails and browse a little Internet. However, it is better to have a faster connection like Wi-Fi when you have to exchange lots of data as it is economical too.
So make the most of your cell phone and be informed all the time!
