There are several things that people can do when they are in hard financial times. First, cut out all extra expenses. When you don't have as much money to spend as you used to you can't expect to spend the same amount. If cutting out entertainment, or even cable TV means paying the bills and eating then it's what you have to do. Times will get better and the extra money will come back. Cutting extras will only be temporary. They'll be brought back into the budget eventually but in order to survive the next six months you may need to cut them out for now.

Only buying the things you must have is a form of cutting out the extras. When the money is tight both needs and wants can not be met. You may want a new outfit or pair of shoes but the baby needs diapers and formula. You may want to get a toy for your child but what they need is three meals a day. In order to meet the needs of your family you sometimes have to cut out the wants. This can be hard but if it's what it takes to make it through then isn't it worth it?

When you do buy the things that you need it is crucial to spend your money carefully. Choose generic brands and buy things in bulk. Look for good deals and use coupons faithfully. Shop around to pay less. The less money you can spend on anything the better off you'll be.

When it comes to the point of income being lost or cut back there are things you can do to bring it back. Look for a new job which will offer more hours. Work a second job or ask for overtime at your current job. Never leave a job willingly without first having another secured. Even if you've had your hours cut back that job is still a job. Leaving it without another secured means no job at all. Stay at home moms can advertise to watch other peoples children during the day, or before and after school. Writers can write and write and write some more. Self employed people can increase the hours they work. Anyway that you can increase your income will help your situation.

Many people have a lot of things laying around that they don't use. Many of these things are like new. A way to increase your income is to sell unused and unwanted items. Do this online at sites like eBay, or through the newspaper by placing free ads. If you have enough stuff you can actually take it to a business level and become a seller. A seller buys things cheap and resells them for more. It has great income potential.

Another way to increase your income is to start crafting. Hand made items will never go out of style. More people are buying hand made items now more than ever because they cost less. Sites like etsy.com let you sell handmade items in a way that lets you make a living. This is great for stay at home moms and dads.
