In order to prevent any complications during the event of a snow storm, it is important to make sure your vehicle is properly maintained. Make sure the fluid levels, wipers, antifreeze, tires, brakes and everything is in good condition. Once it gets too cold it is harder to check, so do it when the weather is fine. Keeping your fuel tank above the middle line at all timed during the winter is also very important. Not only because you will have fuel to move in case you get lost, but also because you can leave your car on to keep yourself warm.
Get yourself an emergency kit in your car planned for the winter. You can include a sleeping bag, a blanket, flashlight, water, energy bars, beef jerky, light sticks, a lighter, and a Swiss army knife. These items will allow you to stay warm and to survive until rescue arrives. A cell phone is a must have in these cases, but you can also tell someone where you are going and that you'll call when you get there. If you don't call, they will look for you.
If you get caught in a storm and stranded, remain in your vehicle unless you have a destination in sight. Going out of your vehicle in the cold and with no destination in sight can get you lost in the middle of nowhere. Don't do it. If you're on the highway, don't pull off in the shoulder or exit ramp because you can create an accident. Instead get in a rest area or at the entrance ramp if you have no better choice.
Try to find a truck stop to get shelter. Truck stops have water, food, groceries, entertainment and showers, so it's a great shelter in case of a snow storm. If you can't find shelter and are stuck in your car, then turn the heat on for about 10 minutes each hour to stay warm, and roll down your window about an inch so you can get fresh air.
