How to Survive a Summer Pregnancy

Dear Auntie
Pregnancy can be a hot time for any woman, but what do you do when your pregnant in the summer? I'm going to give you a few tips to help you out, and survive the summers heat. One of the first things you want to remember is when the temperature outside says it is only 80 degrees, your body is running at a temperature that is about 30 degrees hotter! Don't let the heat get you down, there are many ways to combat it and come out feeling great.

TIP 1:
When you go out and about carry a small spray bottle full of cold water, and throughout the day cool yourself down by spritzing yourself. It will feel great for two reasons for one it will cool you off, but it will also make you feel refreshed.

TIP 2:
Stay hydrated! Drinking plenty of water a day will keep you cool. On average you should drink about 8 glasses of water a day. If you are worried about the water getting hot during the day. Try freezing a bottle or two over night. The ice will slowly melt throughout the day, giving you a refreshing drink that will last hours and stay cool. The other way to keep your water cool for longer is get a travel cup or mug, and fill it with ice cubes to the top and then put water in to it. As you drink the water and the heat melts, more water will be made because of the ice. Providing a cool beverage to last all day.

TIP 3:
Now we all know that it is generally hotter during the middle of the day, so if you have chores to do outside like yard work, try doing it in the morning or in the evening. Why? Well in the morning and the evening the sun is lower so the heat is less intense.

TIP 4:
If the temperature where you live exceeds the heat of 90 degrees stay indoors until it cools off. The best way to stay cool in these kinda of temperatures is to sit by a fan or the air conditioner. If you must go out however try wearing a hat, loose clothing, and take a hand held fan. And always avoid getting sunburn, wear a high factor sunscreen, remember you skin is a lot more sensitive now you are pregnant.

TIP 5:
How about relaxing with a cool smoothie. Smoothies wont just cool you down, but they will also fill you with goodness. So choose your favorite fruit treat yourself, you deserve it after all. Your baby will also enjoy it remember he or she becomes more sensitive to heat as the pregnancy develops. He or she will probably be grateful for the cool off, plus remember the can always tell when mums feeling uncomfortable.

TIP 6:
Go swimming! Many stores now sell maternity swim suits, to make you feel gorgeous. The water will take the weight of your baby off your body and also coll you down. It will be a great treat one you will get cooled off and two the weight of the pregnancy will be lifted whilst you are in the water.

TIP 7:
Wear loose clothing. Try wearing clothes that do not cling to your body, and that are breathable. There is nothing more uncomfortable that being really hot and sweaty in tight clothing. Cotton is a great fabric to wear. It is light and breathable. The main thing to remember is to dress so that you are comfortable.

TIP 8:
We all love to have a great barbecue dinner. However watch out BBQ are an easy way to get an upset tummy. Make sure all meats are cook through completely, if you like a bloody steak try having it cooked more than usual. After all an upset tummy is the last thing you need. Also avoid eating things like potato salads, pasta salads, or coleslaw - when lefty out in heat they can sour which can also cause you to get an upset tummy. Eat these types of foods directly as the come out of the refrigerator so they are cold and fresh.
