How Sweet it is to Live in Sugar Land, Texas

It is so sweet to live in the town of Sugar Land, Texas. I am one of the lucky people who call Sugar Land my home. Sugar Land is ranked as the "hottest" place to live within the state of Texas and third in the United States for 2006 according to Money magazine. Also Sugar Land holds the title of "Fittest City in Texas" for the population 50,000-100,000 range, a title it has held for three consecutive years. Besides all of the wonderful titles that Sugar Land holds the history is amazing. Sugar Land is home to the Imperial Sugar Company hence the name Sugar Land. The Imperial Sugar Company is the one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the State of Texas. They trace their roots back to 1843 when the first sugar mill was commissioned in what later became Sugar Land by one of the original 100 families that Stephen F. Austin brought to Texas.

Sugar Land is located in northeast Fort Bend County, 25 miles (40 km²) southwest of Houston. People that live here now do not need to go to Houston for shopping or entertainment. First Colony Mall is celebrating its 10 anniversary this year. We now have the trendy shop that many major cities have such as Pottery Barn, Coldwater Creek, Williams-Sonoma and Toni & Guy. In addition the City Council has approved the Houston Museum of Natural Science putting a "satellite" museum in Telfair's old prison building. A very great honor indeed. With the median income of $89,603 this is a thriving community. The average home price is $194, 823 and the rate of home price gain is 5.44% over a 2-5 year period.

In addition the schools are wonderful making it a terrific place to raise children. Fort Bend Independent School District elementary schools turned in an exceptional academic performance this year, as 11 of 37 appear ready to move up in the state's accountability ratings. The ratio of 1 teacher per 15.5 students makes for a very healthy learning environment. I have been very pleased with every teacher my children have had. They genuinely care for each and every student along with the other staff. We can also brag that we have 14 colleges, universities and professional schools and 13 junior colleges and technical institutes.

As for the climate, some might call it a little steamy, which I would always prefer over snow. I am not a cold weather climate girl. The average high and low for July are 94/74 and 66/47 for January. We are close to the Gulf Coast so the beach is just a hour or so drive to the beach.

I would recommend to anyone that is in the area to take time out of your busy schedule to visit Sugar Land. I know you will fall in love with this city just as I have. And if you are looking for a place to move to I would give Sugar Land great consideration. Hope to see you here!
