Yes, i have heard them squeak under the floor boards as they go for the caulk and try to chew it and run into the broken glass in there. Mice love dark warm places. I did a search myself years ago on how to beat them, they love closets, loved to hide by furnaces, stoves, fridge, and clothes dryers, dark & warm.
I bought some hard candy peppermint candy,i unwrapped them and have them tossed around on my basement storage floor to keep them out, as i heard they do not like the smell of it,also heard if you stuff cotton balls with peppermint oil on them in holes and then caulk(with my famous caulk mixture) if they chew on the cotton ball with the oil on there it messes up there digestive system and they will die...
** also i have read on several sites, they seem to take a liking to houses that are cluttered, so keep house as organized as possible...no boxes stacked up etc...
** also said mice are drawn by smells, so do not leave cat or dog food out for long periods of time, they really like pet food and like both the dry and moist kind...
** store everything you can in thick plastic containers,I've used these and haven't had mice chew through them, but if you have rats...that's a whole other story...
** if you have big holes, you can use a tin can lid and nail it in place over hole, mice & rats cannot chew through it..
** Also read that anyone that has fruit trees will run into a rodent problem, the fallen fruit mice & rats love...be sure to pick up and dispose of fallen fruit on a daily basis as this fruit attracts them big time..
** take out household garbage everyday, garbage not only attracts rodents by smell, but bugs as well...
** clean up any mice feces or urine droppings with hot soapy water with bleach in it to kill all germs..
** rodents have been known to cause serious lung/breathing problems as there urine and droppings release viruses in the air..as well as can spread diseases traveled through the air from there droppings to humans..
** If you have 1 mouse in house, likely there are more...they seem to follow each other and travel in packs...i had 1 mouse to begin with, and 2 days later realized i had 2 more..1 under fridge, 1 by furnace, and one lurking in my bedroom closet...thank-goodness i got rid of them all...
** i used poison pellets put those down in holes first then caulked all holes with my mixture, put out glue traps...
** I also read on a web site, check the foundation of your house, small cracks in there they can squeeze through and that is how they enter the walls and then your home...they can squeeze through a hole as small as a nickle...believe me i have seen them do it!!!
** also take a piece of metal screen and tack it over your dryer vent on the outside of your house, as they love to enter this way too...
