How to Take Better Photographs

BIRD NAMED JEFF

Most people try to hard to take photographs that look and feel like a professional did the work. While that will provide some good photos it won't capture the actual moment you will cherish for years to come. It also doesn't take an expensive camera with all the bells and whistles to take great pictures. Even the cheap disposable cameras can take great pictures. To take really great photos it takes one thing we all have - imagination.

Being acquainted with your camera is important, but that is not the end-all, be-all of taking a great photo. Expensive cameras are great if you know how to use them. They are not essential building blocks for creating beautiful visual pictures of the moments in our lives we want to remember.

Try killing the flash in low light situations for your photos. Without the flash many times you will be able to see how color around you affects the quality of your images. This may seem kind of weird taking photos without a flash, but more often than not you'll get a perfect photo that keeping the camera on auto-flash would have killed.

Another benefit of not using the flash with your photos is you will be able to see how much yellow and red most indoor lighting is. Take that knowledge outside and you'll see improvements. In low-light situations, without a flash allows you to see exactly how light works.

Photographs that are taken shooting from the hip are a great way to capture the moment. This will give you an unedited perspective that everyone will enjoy talking about for years to come. Shooting from the hip also allows you to see all the action fully - giving you the chance to take multiple photos in a very short time.

If you love to take photos then don't be shy. Most of us have at least one family member that will always have a camera near by. That person will take tons of photographs, of anyone and anything. Often times those family members seem out going. They are not shy about taking pictures. Get rid of your fears of offending someone and learn to enjoy using your camera. In the long run you will find that your photos will be better and more memorable then ever. If you are going to be the documentary film-maker of your family or group of friends, get rid of your inhibitions.

Don't try and control the kids for a perfect shot. Taking great photographs mean capturing the moment and kids will give you plenty of moments to capture. Get down on your hands and knees - kids love it when you are on their level. After all being on their level will is the best place to catch all the little things that will make your pictures stand out.

When photographing kids allow them to be the kid - remember you're capturing the moments, not trying to be a professional. Take their pictures as they interact with the people and things around them. This will also give you great ammunition years by bringing out your old photographs and embarrassing those now grown kids.

Don't be scare to get up close with the camera. Looking back at some of your photographs you've taken over the years, you will likely see many times you have said how you should have been closer. You get a better portrait when you get up close.

Unless you have the money to buy those expensive zoom lenses, and the time to learn to properly use them, always remember the best zoom lens is your feet. The closest you'll ever have to stand for a close-up is normal conversational distance. So don't think of it as a photo but as a conversation. You will have a better picture and they'll thank you for it.

Taking great photographs only requires you to be willing to step up with a willingness to try. Creating long lasting memories of the sites, people and places that shape your life and work will give you years of enjoyable times as you share with your family and friends.

Your best bet for wasting money on an expensive camera - Nikon D1x-Nikon's top-end, single-lens reflex camera. Price - around $5,000.

Zoom lenses do allow you to take pix of people (including kids) when they're not putting on a fake smile. They also make wildlife pix easier to take. I really like your suggestion of killing the flash. What most people don't realize is that the camera sets itself based on the flash being on for a shorter exposure. If the subject is miles away (e.g. landscape) or even 20 - 30 feet away (e.g. a cathedral or square) the flash will not illuminate it sufficiently, and the shot will come out dark.

Nice article, Jeff. I enjoy shooting from the hip. As I have gotten older, I've discovered I take the best pictures when I have my glasses on, lol.

Seriously my favorite pix are always those of the children "in action".
