How to Take Black & White Pictures

Roger C.
Black and white was the only option for photography in the past, but this has changed since the invention of color cameras. Black and White pictures were almost forgotten for some time, but they are very popular right now. They produce certain nostalgia and a vintage feel that keep its popularity going. The ability of Black and White images to produce certain moods and emotions with a dramatic impact is also one of the reasons why they are still being widely used.

Black and White images are described as monochromatic. Monochromatic is a compound word formed by the combinations of two Greek words; 'mono', which means alone, and 'chroma', which means colors. Therefore the term monochrome is used to describe something which has only one color. This 'one-colored' form of art dominated the media in the old days because there wasn't any form of color media then. The only thing people could do was to improve the quality of the image and create better lighting effects.

Black and white photography is different from regular photography. The subject needs to be chosen more carefully in black and white photography because the impact it creates in the final image is great. Some objects that look amazing in color might look too dull and boring in black and white. This is why you need to play close attention to the subject you are about to photograph and chose the best angle to accentuate its best attributes.

Another important element to consider is the balance of lights and shadows. This element is what creates the whole mood and atmosphere of the picture. The same subject photographed with different variations of lights and shadows can look dark and evil, dull and boring, bright and full of life or just plain average. By choosing correctly the light and shadow balance, you will be able to create images that transmit the emotions you want them to.

Even though black and white pictures don't have any color, the colors of the objects you photograph are still important. This is because different colors have different shades sometimes, but other times totally different colors are undistinguishable when transferred to black and white images. Choose subjects with highly contrasting elements to ensure the impact of your mages.

Black and white photography has been around for hundreds of years and is going to continue being used for several hundred years more. This type of art is often used in print and television advertisement especially in the promotion of fashion apparel, fine jewelry of expensive perfumes. Black and white images portray class and luxury, so its use is assured for the years to come.
