How to Take Care of Parrots

Taking care of a parrot is quite a responsibility. Most parrots can out live their owners. Parrots are really quite smart and they enjoy being around people. It takes work, but you will both have so much fun teaching him or her how to talk.

One of the first things you will want to check into is the type of cage to purchase for your new parrot. If your unsure of what some of the requirements are for a cage, ask the pet shop owner where you intend to purchase the parrot from. Many of these shops are quite specialized in birds, and they can usually help you to find a nice cage that will work well for you and your bird.

What a parrot needs is a healthy diet. Did you know that quite a bit of what a parrot eats are some of the very same foods that we do? To give your new parrot a good diet you should give him plenty of sunflower seeds, cucumbers and green beans. Broccoli and carrots are really good for them too. You will also need to supply your parrot with pellets that can be purchased from the pet shop.

Please avoid feeding them avocados and chocolate, because these are definitely not good foods for them. Its kind of runs along the same lines as feeding a dog chocolate. Yes they do want it, but it's not a good idea. You like fresh clean drinking water, don't you? Remember to stay on top of their water bowl and make sure that they have a fresh, clean supply of it.

Something to consider when you purchase the cage is the size. You don't really want it too small or too large. If it's too small, your bird is definitely not going to be happy about that. There are many stainless steel cages available at retain stores. Stainless steel is easy to clean up with a damp sponge and a parrot cannot destroy it by biting it.

Just like children and adults, parrots need to get regular exercise to remain healthy. All parrots need time outside of their cages for proper exercise. You need to understand this before you purchase a parrot. Exercise is required for these pets and if you don't feel that you can have them running around your house, than you might want to re-think your idea about owning one.

Many pets require grooming of some sort, just like dogs and cats. Parrots should be groomed two to three times a week. Retail outfits sell shampoo especially designed for parrots.

When you have provided a healthy diet, adequate space for exercise and kept your pet well groomed, you will be rewarded with a wonderful pet.
