How to Take Care of Your Valuable Microscope ?

Some Tips for Long Use Your Compund Microscope

SAIKAT KUMAR DUTTA
Your microscope definitely is an expensive instrument having very much sensitive lenses. It must be handled with very careful mind. The Compound Light microscope is an important tool for biology lab. It is very popular microscope having three lens system, condenser, objective lens and ocular lens or eye piece lens. The limitation of low magnification in simple microscope has been overcome by using compound microscope where two lenses are used for observation of the micro structures of the specimens. It is essential to observe microscopic plants/animals, cells, tissues etc. those can't be seen by your naked eye.

HOW TO PROPERLY USE A COMPOUND MICROSCOPE :

A. You must always keep the microscope clean and dry.

B. When a slide is focused under the high power objective, it should not be pulled or removed.

C. The microscope lenses must be cleaned by lens paper after each time using of the microscope. Xylene can be used as a solvent for erasing the dusts of the lenses.

D. When you are going to view specimens firstly view under the low power objective lens, then bring the specimen into the focus by coarse adjustment screw. After that if you want to get more magnified view then rotate the nose piece at high power objective lens and then bring the specimen into the focus by fine adjustment screw.

E. Avoid the objective lens to keep away from the slide, if possibility arises then always cover the specimen on the slide with a cover glass.

F. Never remove the slide from the stage when it is focused under the high power objective.

G. When the use is over always replace the microscope within a microscope case or it's wooden box.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS MUST BE TAKEN FOR USING A COMPOUND MICROSCOPE :

A. At first always focus the specimen under low power magnification.

B. Try to avoid the lens to touch the stage or the slide.

C. Always take the microscope in upright position, hold it firmly by the arm with your one hand and hold the base by other hand at that time.

D. Keep clean the lenses by lens cleaning solution everyday.

E. When you are observing a specimen under a microscope do not tilt it's body.

F. Adjust the diaphragm always after switching lens or slides or both.

G. During wet mount preparations always use square or round coverslips.

H. Do not touch the lens. Hold the microscope with clean hands as far as practicable.
