How to Take Care of Yourself - A Guide for Women

Nancy J. Amansec
As hard-working women, we often forget how important it is to take care of ourselves. To most of us, taking care of ourselves is a small detail when compared to taking care of our family or creating the next million-dollar deal at work. We work 40-hour weeks, take care of the house (cleaning, cooking, helping with homework, laundry, etc.) and nurture the children (and in some cases, the husbands). Unfortunately, taking care of ourselves comes last on the list. However, taking care of yourself is most important of all because if you take care of yourself then it's that much easier to take care of everyone and everything else around you.

Healthy Eating
It is so important to eat healthy. A healthy diet can prevent certain diseases such as heart disease and cancer. It can help in relieving stress and provide you with more energy. Eating right improves your body functions, strengthens your immune system and aids in maintaining a healthy weight.
The keys to eating healthy are to not skip meals, eat more salads, veggies and fruits by keeping your meals simple, avoid eating lots of sugar, and the most important factor is listening to your body. You need to know when your body is hungry or thirsty and when it's full. To follow good dietary guidelines you should use the USDA Food Pyramid.

Getting Enough Sleep
As humans, we need sleep but millions of us push ourselves every night to keep going until we just can't go anymore. We fall into bed exhausted and then, in what seems like a blink of the eye, we're waking to an alarm that usually startles us out of bed.

We typically need about 8 hours of sleep per night but there are people who need less sleep and then there are people who need more sleep. When your alarm goes off, if you hit the snooze button, you're not getting enough sleep. Missing sleep causes irritability and moodiness and that's just to start. After these preliminary signs, you may experience apathy, slow speech, impaired memory and difficulty in multi-tasking. It doesn't even end there. Missing sleep impairs the immune system, affects the brain, nervous and cardiovascular systems, and metabolic functions.

We may tell ourselves that we'll make up our sleep on the weekend but we never truly make up sleep. When we "sleep in" on the weekends we throw off our inner clock (sleep regulator) and then when we need to rise early the following Monday we're tired all over again. It is important to get the same amount of sleep every night, preferably by going to bed at the same time and rising at the same time.

Exercise
Whether you choose Yoga, aerobics, weight training or a combination of different exercise plans, exercise helps the health of your body and mind. Exercise can reduce daily stresses, it can improve your mood by making you feel more confident, and lowers the symptoms associated with depression and anxiety. It may cause your body to release endorphins, which are your brain's feel-good transmitters (this is the equivalent to the "runner's high"). Exercising twenty minutes a day, three to four days a week can have you feeling better in no time. You'll notice a difference in your body, mood, and even the amount of energy you have. Exercise is also a perfect way to allow your body to be tired at the end of the day for that sleep you so desperately need.

Establishing a Beauty Routine
Taking care of the outside of our body is just as important as taking care of the inside; it all goes hand in hand. Whether you create your own beauty routine or go to a salon and have one done by a professional it will do you good. It can relieve stress, boost your self-confidence, and give your face and body a healthy glow. The beauty routine you choose will consist of some of the other facts I've earlier, including eating healthy, exercise, and getting enough sleep.

Spend Some Time Alone or Getting Out With Friends (Without Feeling Guilty)
To take care of ourselves mentally, we all need a break from our daily routines. For women, this is the hardest to do. It's bad enough we feel guilty about being away from our children while we are at work or running errands or we feel guilty because if we're with our children we're not concentrating enough on work or doing all the household duties, but on top of it, we feel the most guilty if we take time for ourselves. Taking time away doesn't mean we need to leave our family for an extended period of time, it can mean going to your bedroom and just relaxing by taking a bath, reading a book, or just doing your normal beauty routine. Make sure your family understands that it's at this time that you do not want any interruptions. If it's hard for your family to even live five minutes without your input on something then leave the house and go for a walk around your neighborhood, meet a friend for coffee, go see a movie, or go window-shopping.

Using these important guidelines and establishing your own routine will do such wonders for your mind, body and soul. It is, however, important to know that before starting any exercise routine you should consult your doctor. A nutritionist can also help you with setting some guidelines for a healthy diet that fits you and your family.
