How to Take Charge of Your Own Life

Not Letting Circumstances Get the Best of You

Shawn Thomas
Too often are people controlled and beat down by their circumstances and what they are expected to do. Many may argue that this is a result of society, pressure, and norms. Thus it depends on many externalities such as your age, gender, religion, and background.

When people head off to college they often find themselves conflicted between the balances of schoolwork and having fun. Once a job begins a similar problem occurs with a balance between work and leisure. This can create substantial problems just achieving this balance and not feeling too stressed and overwhelmed.

However, when other problems and circumstances begin to occur the stress and problems can really mount up. This happens when health problems occur such as injuries and sicknesses causing work and school to need to be on the back burner. Loss of loved ones and friends can create emotional turmoil and be difficult to deal with.

The best way to deal with such circumstances can be to seek professional help such as a counselor or therapist. They can provide techniques and strategies to help you work through your life. Even so you need to be armed with your own tools and strategies.

Something good to do is restructure your thinking on many issues. The bottom line is that often times things in life are unfair. Laws will be broken and people will act in their own self interests. Even so we must act in the interest of others and follow laws. We can get angry when unfair circumstances arise but we must not retaliate and act out against others.

There are good strategies and coping skills we can use. It is good to take time to relax and enjoy life every day. It is also good to regularly exercise. This can help ease stress and other negative emotions.

Creating a schedule and effectively managing your time is also important. If you are in school you should map out the time you need to be in classes and the time you will spend for extracurricular activities and exercise. Then you will want to leave extra time for free time and going out. If you have extra homework or responsibilities you cannot go out as much. Everyone can find tools that will benefit them the best. For example, some people may find it effective to study for an hour or 2 at a time and then take a break for a reward. Others may find it effective when studying during certain times of the day.

If you have a job you may need to time manage even better especially if you also have a family and kids. You will need to be adept at getting a schedule down if your job is demanding.

Other ways to create more time and flexibility for yourself is to chose certain career paths. This will work better if you are young but can also work for middle aged people as well. Ultimately you should not go into something that you will not find rewarding and beneficial to others as it may be stressed without much else.
