How to Take Full Advantage of Your Public Library System and Its Books!

Benefits of a Public Library

E.A. Anne
The public library system in the United States is absolutely wonderful but also entirely underutilized. As tax payers, we supply the funding for our public libraries, but most of us do not take full advantage of all of the benefits our libraries have to offer. But public libraries are great-- you can rent all kinds of books, from fiction to non-fiction, various movies, books on tape, popular television shows and more. So start taking advantage of all of those resources your public library has to offer!

Interlibrary Loan
One of the neatest benefits of public libraries is the interlibrary loan system. Library cardholders not only have access to their local library branch but also to all of the other library branches in the entire city. Cardholders are in no way limited to what the books their branch houses but can take advantage of the entire array of books owned by that public library. Public library systems have an incredibly vast collection of books, tapes, dvds, etc. so don't be afraid to go after those resources!

Holds and Requests
Another great benefit and underutilized tool of a public library system is that users not only can borrow books from other branches in the city, but users can also request books from other branches to be delivered to their local branch! This tool is great for cardholders who don't have time to trek across town to another public library branch. All you have to do is find the book you want online in your public library database, place a hold request on the book, name the branch you'd like it delivered to, and wait a few days for an email to arrive in your inbox. The book will be delivered to your local branch and will be waiting for you behind the check-out counter-- its that easy!

You can even place holds on books within your public library branch's collection system. This has all sorts of benefits, from avoiding confusion stemming from the dewy-decimal system, to ensuring that the book you want will be available for you when you need it, to pure and delightful convenience. You just can't beat this great benefit of public libraries.

Movies and Television Shows
Most cardholders don't know that some of their favorite television programs and movies are all available at public libraries! Most popular TV shows are available on DVD, and a vast number of class movies are also waiting to be checked out (although libraries vary on which new release movies are available and when).

Popular and New Release Fiction
Most public libraries also offer popular fiction books and other new releases. This means that you don't need to purchase expensive hardcovers only for them to gather dust on your bookshelves after you're done!

Other great benefits of our public library system:
It's all Free!
Dusty old books smell good
Wireless and Wired Internet access is available
Public Computers are available
Quiet Study Atmosphere
