How to Take Kindergarteners on a Field Trip

Alicia Bodine
  • How many field trips should a Kindergarten kid take? It is recommended that Kindergarten kids go on 3 field trips per year
  • Where should you go for your field trips? Pumpkin patchesMovie theater (if a good movie happens to be playing)Children's museum, Zoos,Aquariums, a nature hike/trail*Consider also any attractions in your local area that are appropriate for Kindergartner's. We have a theme park called Story Book Land that geared toward little children and uses familiar characters from story books like Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Alice in Wonderland.
  • How much help are you going to need? A good rule of thumb is to use one chaperone for 3-4 students. No chaperone should have more than that at the kindergarten level. So if you have a total of 20 students you would want 4 chaperone's plus yourself. Parents are usually eager to volunteer for field trips because they are fun.
  • What should you bring? Have parents pack their children a brown paper bag lunch. This is easier to tote around and is disposable so children don't have to carry anything the second half of the day. Make sure the parents put their child's name on the front of the bags. Also, have each parent send you a list of known allergies so their child doesn't get anything they shouldn't. You will also want to bring bug spray or sun block depending on where you are going for your field trip.Have the students wear comfortable shoes. Most schools outlaw flip flops and open toed shoes on field trip days. A great suggestion is to have each student wear a school shirt with the name of the school on it. If you don't have a school shirt you need to buy a pack of white label stickers. Place the students first name as well as the school's name on the sticker and make sure the children wear them. This will help you find them or get them back if they wander off.
  • Final Tips: Have the parents of the children attending the field trip sign a written permission slip.Make sure you explain the rules of conduct for the bus ride to the field trip before the kids get on the bus.
