How to Take the Spool Off a Toro 7-Inch Trimmer

Peter Maida
I am not a home improvement or a lawn and garden expert. I told my wife a long time ago that I am a software guy not a hardware guy, but there I some things that you just have to do weather you like it or not. Cutting the grass and trimming around the edges are two of those things.

I have found the Toro seven inch trimmer to be exactly what I need. My yard would probably be considered a medium size property and I do have it fenced in. Trimming is definitely required around the fence, the deck, the walks, and the driveway. I had a gas powered trimmer but it gave me too much trouble starting. My Toro seven inch is a cordless trimmer and has the power to do what I need and the power lasts through the job that has to be done. Being as unskilled as I am I managed to lose the instruction book for the printer.

The trimmer ran out of line recently, so I drove over to the local Home Depot and picked up a new pre-wound spool and brought it home. The part number for the spool is 88075. If you're anything like me you won't have had that information available.

I turned the trimmer over and proceeded to take off the old spool and I realized I had no idea how to do it. The instruction book was no where to be found so I twisted and turn the spool and it would not budge. I asked several people and no one had that type of trimmer. I looked online and I couldn't find any help. All information on replacing the spool started with the line, "Take off the old spool."

Finally I went to the local mower sale and service center. I offered to buy two spools if someone could help me get the spool off. Of course the lady behind the counter was very knowledgeable with trimmers and she took it off in a second.

Here's the how it is done. Twisting and turning spool is not the thing to do.

1. There are two slots in the spool. Choose one of the two slots; it doesn't matter which is used.

2. Insert a flat head screw driver into the slot.

3. Twist the screw driver to the left and the spool will pop off.

It is very simple once you know how to do it. If you have lost the instruction book or maybe you bought a trimmer second hand and there was no book available then this information may be useful.
