How to Take the Stress Out of Christmas Shopping
Enjoy Christmas Shopping This Year: Less Stress Shopping
It is important to have a strategy when getting ready to do your Christmas shopping. It would be great if we all had the money to have all of our Christmas shopping done throughout the year. All you would have to worry about would be decorating and meal preparations. Parties would be exciting and there would be no stress about Christmas shopping.
The one drawback about having all of your shopping done early is that you may end up spending more money. You are bound to see things that you can't resist buying that are on sale or available after you have all of your shopping done. If this is the case it may be best to stay out of the stores during the holidays. It will help you avoid spending more money than you can afford.
If you are like most people during hard economic times you probably haven't got all of your Christmas shopping done before December. I am going to list a few things that have helped me to prepare for Christmas shopping that makes it less stressful and more enjoyable.
Don't go into hock buying gifts for people that you can't afford. If you have the time and can make gifts that is even a better idea. I unfortunately used to make most of my gifts and would get stressed out trying to get things done that maybe the person really didn't care about as much as I did.
Be honest about what you can afford with the people that you are getting gifts for. It is more important to spend time with your loved ones than it is to spend money on them. If you spend money that you can't afford to spend, you can end up resenting the person that you spent the money on.
Decide how much you are going to spend on gifts. Have a general idea if you don't already have a list from the ones that you are buying gifts for, of what you want to purchase for them.
Make a list. I know that sounds simple, but many times people go out and just expect gifts to magically appear. I think that Aunt Susan would like this perfume or Uncle Bob would like this cologne. Try to go with a plan.
Shop online. If you shop online though make sure you do it ahead in plenty of time so you don't stress out about your purchases coming in time for Christmas. If you don't like the items you may be hard pressed to return them and get your money back in time.
Try to shop at a time when other shoppers won't be out. When my children were young, I would go shopping after they were all in bed. We had our neighborhood Meijer's and Walmart that were open 24 hours a day. I enjoyed going with a friend late at night. Use caution if you do this. Otherwise find other times when the stores are not as busy and traffic is not heavy in your area to do your shopping.
Make sure that you are well rested and not hungry when you go Christmas shopping. You don't want to be grumpy, grouchy, tired or hungry when you go Christmas shopping.
Go with a friend if you can. If you can go out to lunch and enjoy going with someone else many times it is more enjoyable. If you are not one who likes to go shopping with others, go by yourself.
Make sure that you have plenty of time. Don't try to jam a dentist's appointment in with your Christmas shopping. Not only will you be stressed out trying to fit all of it together, but also you may be stressed about going to a dentist or doctor's appointment.
Try to be kind to other drivers and shoppers. Don't let road rage be a part of your Christmas shopping experience. People get insane out there when they are in a hurry. I try to make it a point to be polite, and kind to other drivers and shoppers. I will go out of my way to let another driver or shopper to get in line a head of me. Try to remember the spirit of Christmas.
If all else fails you can always get gift certificates for everyone and eliminate all of your stress. That is not always a bad idea. It may not work for young children, but older kids and adults love having gift certificates.
Don't try to get it all done in one day. Try to enjoy the shopping experience. It is not easy in these difficult economical times. Many people like to Christmas shop. If you have plenty of time and money God bless you. Not everyone is that fortunate.
Last of all AVOID using CREDIT CARDS! There is nothing like credit card bills coming in after the holidays to put a real damper on your life. That is stress that you don't need.

Post a CommentGreat advice. We used to do a grab bag with the adults, now we just buy for the kids.
Good advise. I no longer "enjoy" the shopping experience, however. I usually go out tge week after Christmas, and scoop up bargains for the next year.
very good points indeed
Ha I can relate. It is really hard to know when the best time to go is, especially if they cut back on cashiers.
Exceptional suggestions. I'll post this link on facebook. We all need to be reminded. My only disagreement is Walmart. Went at midnight Saturday, a moderate crowd, one register. That store gives me anxiety, as much as I am a Walmart shopper. Great tips.
Great suggestions Shana, but could ya remind me a little earlier next year?
I always have my Christmas done way before Thanksgiving.
