How to Take that Turtleneck from Day to Evening This Winter

Lisa Riggs
The turtleneck has been a fashion staple for decades, for very good reason. The right one can make you look extremely polished and stylish, while also keeping you warm and cozy. If you have previously shied away from this sweater style in seasons past, take another look at how versatile the turtleneck can be. With just a bit of attention to what cut and style you choose, along with some well placed accessories, this wardrobe essential can easily take you from behind your desk during the day to a night of fun with your mate or your girlfriends.

Choose a Form Fitting Turtleneck for the Best Look. A very baggy or ill fitting sweater may keep the winter winds from going down your back, but it won't look nearly as stylish or flattering. Choose a sweater that hugs you in all the right places and beautifully shows off your curves. If you are concerned that a few extra pounds around the middle will take away from the end result, simply choose a turtleneck sweater in a dark color such as black, steel gray, brown or navy blue. Avoid patterns or sweaters that incorporate too many colors into the design.

Wear your Favorite Sweater with Black Dress Pants or Trousers and Boots. A well cut turtleneck and dark colored dress pants is not only a professional look for the office, it also works very well in a night time setting. A blazer worn during the day makes the outfit even more conservative for work, but can easily be taken off once you hit the town after hours.

Add a Denim Jacket to a Black Turtleneck and Cargo Pants for Casual Day at the Office. A fun and current look for casual Friday at the office is a well cut black turtleneck worn with either a light or dark colored denim jacket finished off with well fitting cargo pants. Not only is this ensemble casual and carefree, it is also super comfortable. Setting off for work in this outfit means you won't need to run home to change to meet your friends at the movies or at the local pub for drinks in the evening.

Layer a Scarf Over your Sweater on the Coldest Days of the Season. Scarves are once again a fashion must have this winter, so investing in a few pretty ones in different lengths and patterns can serve you well. Experiment with different types of knots and tying techniques to get the most bang for your buck. Wear these pieces over a pencil style skirt and knee length boots for a very attractive and up to the minute look that easily carries you from the conference room to the dining room at night.

Wear a Stunning Statement Necklace over your Turtleneck Sweater. Statement necklaces look gorgeous over these style sweaters and draw attention to the upper portion of your body. This not only brings the eye up to your new haircut and perfectly applied makeup, not to mention great smile and gorgeous eyes, it also draws the line of vision away from any perceived body flaws. After choosing a great fitting sweater and your statement piece, complete the outfit with a pencil style skirt, well fitting trousers and a cute pair of flats or Mary Jane style shoes. You will look perfectly pulled together for the office, and perfectly in style for a get together later in the evening with friends.

A Black Turtleneck and Dark Denim Jeans is a Stunning Combination. If your workplace does not frown upon the wearing of jeans, you have a great opportunity to put together a fantastic outfit for work or play. Pair a black sweater with a dark pair of boyfriend, boot cut or skinny jeans and add a pair of black leather or suede boots. A single silver chain and simple hoops gives this ensemble some real polish and a touch of sophistication.
