How to Take Yourself Off of Other People's Twitter Lists

Andrea Ruiz
Twitter is a social media phenomenon, allowing its users to post micro-blogs of 140 characters or less, and follow each other's Twitters to keep up with everyone else's updates. As the service has grown, it introduced a feature called lists. Twitter lists are a convenient way of grouping the users you follow into categories for easier and more convenient reading: family, tech news, celebrities. You can create Twitter reading lists for any purpose you want. Unfortunately, these lists are publicly visible. If you're on another person's Twitter list, this fact is visible right on your Twitter profile. If you've been put on an unflattering list, or just a list that you don't want others to see you on, there's an easy way to take your name off any list you want on Twitter.

1. Log into your Twitter account. You need to be logged in to make any changes to your account.

2. From the home page, click on the "Listed" link under your username in the right-hand column. This will display all the lists on which your Twitter username appears.

3. Scroll down and click on the icky list. You know the one - the list you're trying to disassociate yourself from! This list is in chronological order, from most recently added to last, so you may have to scroll to find it. This will take you to the page of the actual list. You will see all the tweets of everyone on the list.

4. Find the maintainer of that list. It will be in the upper right corner under the words "This list was created by." Click on that username to go to the user's profile.

5. Block that sucker. It may seem mean, but that's the only way to remove yourself from a user's Twitter list. Don't worry, you can always unblock them again right away if you want - you'll still be off their list! Block them by clicking the "block" link on the right under "Actions." You can also block them by clicking on the cog icon in the white middle column just under their username. It will bring up a drop-down menu, from which you can select "Block User." Tada! Your name is magically removed from the list in question, and it no longer shows up in the "Listed" section of your profile.

6. Unblock the user - but only if you want to. If you were following the user, you'll automatically follow them again once you unblock them, and they'll still be able to follow you. Be advised that, once unblocked, the user may re-add you to the list you just removed yourself from, and you'll have to start all over again. If you want to make absolutely certain you remain off someone's list, you have to keep them blocked.

Blocking a user removes you from all of the lists on which they've placed your Twitter. So if you want to take yourself off one list of a user but stay on their other lists, then you must ask the user directly to take you off that one list. This doesn't offer any guarantees, especially if you don't know the user, so at least Twitter has provided an easy way to remove your Twitter name from a list yourself.

Thanks, Mandy, and you're welcome, Phyllis! The article is borne out of experience. I've found myself on some WEIRD lists since Twitter implemented them. I think my favorite was "Etsy Grandmas." I don't have an Etsy account and have never purchased anything from the site, and I'm definitely NOT a grandma! LOL!
