How Taking Cinnamon Supplements Can Lower Your Triglycerides Levels Naturally

Case Study

Lyn McCallister
If your doctor has indicated to you that your triglycerides levels are too high, you may be wondering how to lower those levels without taking drugs. This article presents a case study in which I used cinnamon supplements over a 6 month period to determine what, if any, impact the spice has on lowering triglyceride levels.

Note: I am not a medical doctor. Before beginning any herb or supplement program, please consult your physician.

Quick Stats:

Triglyceride Level on June 20th as measured by fasting blood test: 371

Triglyceride Level on December 18th as measured by fasting blood test: 128

Total Improvement: 243

I have a family history of high triglycerides despite eating a healthy diet, exercising, not being obese, and not smoking. In fact, my blood lipid panels beginning in my early 20s showed very high levels. Oftentimes, high triglycerides are accompanied by high bad cholesterol levels and low good cholesterol levels. In short, there is a family component to your numbers that you cannot control.

Now, 10 years later it seems as though I may have found a natural remedy in cinnamon supplements. My goal was to avoid popping another pill with the potential for some extremely nasty side effects.

What is a Normal Triglyceride Level?

According to WebMD, healthy triglyceride levels are less than 150 milligrams per deciliter. What you are looking for as a healthy individual is any number under 150. I am so happy to report that taking cinnamon supplements finally allowed me to cross into the healthy range.

Other triglyceride levels from WebMD:

Healthy: Under 150 mg/dL

Borderline High: 150 to 199 mg/dL

High: 200 to 499 mg/dL

Very high: 500 mg/dL or higher

In my situation, both my good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels were normal.

What Kind of Cinnamon Supplement Did I Use?

Although you could just purchase cinnamon in bulk at your local grocery store and an extra amount to your cooking, I found that this method was easy to forget.

Instead, I purchased cinnamon extract tablets available from local grocery stores, vitamin stores, or online. I used the brand Planetary Herbals Full Spectrum Cinnamon Extract in a 60 tablet jar of 200 milligrams each. I took one cinnamon supplement each morning with my regular multi-vitamin at breakfast.

You can find these same cinnamon tablets on Amazon for about $18 plus shipping for a 2-pack of 120 tablet jars. This low cost is very reasonable compared to prescription medications.

Consistency is very important. Your triglyceride levels may or may not decrease if you use cinnamon extract supplements. If you do use them and have your doctor's agreement, then be very consistent. The supplements won't work if you use them sporadically.
