How to Talk to Your Teen About Pornography

Tara Cellars
There are many topics that are touchy for parents to talk about with their teenage child. Sex, drugs, and pornography are a few of these hard to discuss topics. If you are a parent and reading this you have probably been in the situation where you want to learn how to talk to your child about pornography. You must evaluate your own views on pornography to figure out how to discuss this topic with the teen. When teens start to get curious about sex and relationships, they might turn to pornography. How many times have you seen a movie or television show where a teenage boy had a Playboy magazine hidden under his bed? I'm sure it's more than a few. If you have ever caught your teen doing something similar, I'm sure you are wondering how to discuss it.

First of all you should not overreact. You should calmly tell them later that you want to talk to them about it. This will give you as a parent and them as a teen to calmly think about the situation. You will then be able to talk to each other through this uncomfortable conversation. Once you have evaluated your beliefs you can have the talk about your views on pornography. Overall you should be honest. You should tell the teenager that you understand they are apparently curious about sex. Know that this will be hard to talk about, but always be honest, do not jump to conclusions, and do not be judgmental. You must find out how you are going to handle the situation. If they are open with you and say that it is the first time, you can explain to them why they should not be looking at things like this. You can explain to them how it can become addicting. You can also explain your own personal views on it with them. If you are someone that views pornography you can explain why you don't have a problem with them viewing it. You can tell them that it is part of growing up.

No matter what side you are on, you should always be honest. If they ask you if you have ever done the same, answer honestly. Then if you don't or do still view it, explain to them why. Honesty is best in these situations. If you have a problem with them viewing pornography a suggestion would be to block it on your computer, but they can always go to a friend's house and see it there. It is just best to explain the pros and cons of the whole situation.
