How to Teach an Arts and Crafts Class

Do you enjoy arts and crafts? Can you come up with imaginative ideas and show other people how to do the same things you do? Then you could have a future in teaching arts and crafts classes.

To start off with, you need to decide what you want to teach in your arts and crafts course and how long it should be. The class might be an hour to two hours long and held once a week. The duration of the course is completely up to you. If you plan to hold it during the summer, you might make it six weeks to fit in with summer vacation plans, but you could also make it a three week or a ten week course, the choice is yours.

Once you have decided on how many classes to teach, the actual arts and crafts come into play. The projects chosen for the course should be ones that can be easily completed within the allotted time frame of the class, even by fairly slow crafters.

Now that you have your arts and crafts class planned out, it is time to work on costs and location. In most cases, your own home could be used as the class center, as long as it isn't too far away from the center of town or lacking in space. As long as you have a table or two and space to host up to 10 or 12 crafters, you should be fine, even if this means setting up in the garage.

If you don't have a good place that would work as an arts and crafts classroom, it's time to look at outside choices. Remember that renting a space will automatically raise class prices, which is something you want to avoid, so look for free or very low rent places first. Churches, friend's homes and the like are the best options for free or low cost rentals.

With all this set up, you will need to set prices and advertise. Figure out the cost of all the materials needed for each craft and add them up. If you are paying rent, this should be divided by the minimum number of arts and crafts students. Add the new amount to the materials total and you have the cost per person of your class. You can now double that amount so you are earning a profit. For example, if you have to pay $100 in total for the rent, and your minimum number of students is 5, you would start off with $20 and add the cost of materials, say $50. That brings us to a total of $70 for your class cost per person. Doubled, $140 would be the price you charge people to take the class.

Advertising will be your final step. Many communities offer bulletin boards or even printouts of local events and most are free for you to add your event. Put your arts and crafts class in the local newspaper as well. Good luck on your new adventure!
