How to Teach Children the Books of the Bible

Becky Fuentes
Teaching your Sunday School kids the books of the Bible is such an important task. By learning the books of the Bible you are providing your students with the very basic foundation that they will need in their spiritual life. It helps them become more familiar with their Bible and will make it easier for them study the Bible more intensely as they grow older.

Repetition
The more your kids hear the books of the Bible, the better they'll remember them. Get in the habit of repeating at least one section of the books of the Bible during each class. If your lesson is in Genesis that week, then repeat the books of the Law. If you're in Psalms, repeat the books of Poetry. Kids love to get loud, so make it more like a game and ask them to get louder as they repeat the books and then get softer and louder again.

Games
Games are another great way to help kids learn the books of the Bible. One such example, is Books of the Bible Bingo. You can find all the rules and how-to for Books of the Bible Bingo here. If you're not good at coming up with creative games, just incorporate the Books of the Bible into a favorite children's game. For example, Tic-Tac-Toe, Rock, Paper, Scissors or Hangman.

Writing
It's a good idea to have your kids practice writing out the books of the Bible in addition to just repeating them out loud. This will ensure that they know the proper spelling and it also makes it easier to memorize something when you write it out. Don't assign all the books of the Bible at once. Break it up into sections and have them get a little bit of practice each Sunday.

Incentives
Kids are more likely to pay attention and memorize the books of the Bible if they know there is a little reward waiting for them when they complete this task. It doesn't have to be anything huge - you can offer them a small treat such as toy, special snack, etc. as they go through the books of the Bible. But once they learn all 66 books, you can offer something a big more special, perhaps a movie ticket, gift certificate to a kid-friendly restaurant or even just cash. If it's something that they really want, they will work harder to learn the books of the Bible and may even learn them faster than you'd expect.
