How to Teach Kids to Love Food

Sydney
With so much media attention focused on popular celebrities such as Nicole Richie, Mary Kate Olsen, Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff and their eating disorders, many teenage girls are bound to want to follow that kind of destructive path as well. The fashion industry we know today has depicted being stick thin as glamorous. But what many teenage girls don't know about being underweight is that it is unhealthy and destructive. Though being skinny may seem to be the resolution and answer to everything from being more likeable to being able to wear what you want, there are far too many health risks and concerns that come along with it as well. As parents, it is a duty and responsibility to teach your kids to love food early on so that they don't end up seeing food as an enemy.

1. Take your kids grocery shopping.

By taking your kids on a grocery store trip with you, you are allowing them to become involved in the process of selecting what kinds of food to eat. Of course, you should help them select healthy foods that are enjoyable to the taste buds as well. Furthermore, it is crucial that you allow them to choose a variety of foods to eat so that the menu at home doesn't get too boring and bland.

2. Eat meals together.

This is another important step in helping your children create a love for food. Kids will enjoy eating meals together and will have something to look forward to because they get to spend quality time with their families. Eating at the table together should become a family tradition. Many American kids eat their meals alone or sit in front of the television while eating, which increases the chances of obesity because they don't notice how much food they're actually consuming until they empty out the cereal box in one sitting. And as we all know, obesity is one of the initial causes of people disliking food.

3. Cook together.

By allowing them to become involved in the process of the making of the meals, kids will learn to appreciate food more. They will start experimenting with food themselves and will start seeing food as objects of creation and fun.

4. Take your kids to the local farmer's market.

Because farmer's markets are known for selling fresh fruits and vegetables, allowing your children to go to the local farmer's market gives them the opportunity to taste food at it's best.

It seems like either someone is looking up to people with eating disorders or they can't get their hands of the McDonald's fries. There needs to be balance!
