How to Teach Your Kids to Read

Kimberly Smith
Teaching your kids a skill for life is one of the most important things that we have as a job as parents. I know that some of the things that you need to teach your kids are very straight forward such as them using the bathroom, washing hands, brushing teeth, and not running into the middle of the interstate. However, one thing that you might not think about, but is another important skill that they need for life is learning how to read. I know that they will learn how to read in school as well, but the best place to start teaching your kids to read is at home.

The first thing that you can do to help your kids start reading is to read to them often. I know that is what I did with my kids and it helped build up a great knowledge base for them that they want to keep expanding on. I know that when I first started reading to them they would always try to grab the book away from me and try to tear the pages so I would recommend using the cardboard books to start off with.

The second thing is that once they stopped trying to take the books out of my hands to tear everything up in them I would start to put my finger on the page with the word so that they could follow the words as well. This helped them start recognizing some of the more common words that they would see. I know that one of the favorite books that they have is Railway Rhymes and they actually are able to read some of the pages that they have in this book just by using this method.

The third thing is I would have some of the cards that you can buy or make yourself with the picture of the item and the name of it on the other side. I would then hold up the name of the picture and have them tell me what it was. I would give them a minute or so to figure it out and after that time they would have to give me an answer. If the answer was right it went into a different pile than if the answer was wrong.

Teaching your kids how to read is one of the most important thing that you can do at home. I know that teaching your kids takes a life time, but it is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Teaching them how to read though is one thing that will help them have a prosperous life.
