How to Teach the Letters and Sounds of the Alphabet

Charisma
If you have a child under the age four, and he or she do not know the sound of the letters, why not start teaching them. Give your child the opportunity to write and listen to sounds of the alphabet. This is the time when a child brain is developing. Here are some activities you could do with your child at home.

First what we are going to do is introduce your child capital and lower case letters. At the same time, you could teach them the sounds of the alphabet. By recognizing and sounding out letters, your child will learn how read. To introduce matching capital and lower case letters, we need to gather 26 separate envelops. Write one capital letter in the front of the envelope. Inside the flap of the envelopes, write the matching lowercase letter. Then cut out small squares. In each square, write a capital and lower case letter. Do this until you reached the end of the ABC's. Then have your child match the letters. When they match them, introduce the sounds of the letters. Then ask your child to look for the enveloped that resembles the capital and lower case letter. Have your child place both matching letters inside the envelops.

Another activity you could do is open a children's book. Read the book to your child. Then pick a word from the book. Write it on a piece of paper. Help your child sound of each letter. When sounding out each letter move your finger under the word.

Go to the kitchen and point out products that contain letters that your child recognized. Remember ask your child if he or she remembers the letter and the sound that it makes. If they do not remember, help them out. Go thru your entire kitchen looking for letters to sound off.

Another fun activity would be asking your child to help you make a list of groceries. Ask your child to help you write. When you write the first letters, ask if a capital or lower case letter is. Then sound the first letter. Ask your child if they could help you out sounding the letter out. Then sound out the following letter. When finish, try to combine the whole word by sounding it out. Then say the word. Ask your child to repeat the word. Keep doing this until you finish with all the words.
