Preschoolers are a very unique bunch to teach. Although they haven't started school yet and do not have any kind of classroom experience, childhood experts actually say that preschoolers are some of the best learners because their young minds are so eager to learn new things. While it's true that you will have to alter your teaching methods to better suit their age and their learning needs, it is not as difficult as it may seem. Here are some basic tips to keep in mind when teaching a preschool age Sunday School class.
How To Teach Preschoolers in Sunday School Tip #1
Use lots of sounds in your teaching
Sound is very important to a preschooler. When telling your Bible stories, pay careful attention to the way you tell the story. Try changing your voice as you recount what each different character said in the story. You can also create your own sound effects for simple things like wind, rain, walking, shouting, etc. If there are any animals in your Bible story (for example, if you're telling them the story of Noah) ask your preschoolers to tell you what sounds the animals make. Using sound in a Bible story telling will help your preschoolers to listen attentively and to remember the story afterwards.
How To Teach Preschoolers in Sunday School Tip #2
Use music in your teaching
Preschoolers love singing! Use music in your preschool Sunday School class and you'll find that it is not only fun, but helps your preschoolers to learn Bible truths as well. Teach them new Bible songs, using lots of motion. You can even put music (a very simple melody) to memory verses to help them learn Scripture.
How to Teach Preschoolers in Sunday School Tip #3
Use touch in your teaching
Your preschoolers will love seeing your cool visual aids and pictures when you are telling a story, but they'll love touching those visual aids even more. Incorporate touch into your teaching by making simple visual aids out of construction paper and letting each child hold one. As you tell the Bible story, have them hold up their visual aid or bring it to the front of the class. Things like chains, animals, a cross, crown and even Bible characters can be visual aids in a story and can easily be created and cut out from construction paper.
How to Teach Preschoolers in Sunday School Tip #4
Use motion in your teaching
If you've spent any time at all with preschoolers, you know that they love to move around! Use their energy to your advantage and keep them moving while you teach Sunday School. Sing Bible songs that incorporate motions. Have your preschoolers act out the Bible story as you tell it. Play games where the children can stand up, sit down, move from one side of the class to the other or from table to table. Remember that preschoolers cannot stay in one place for too long. So always keep them moving!
There are so many way to teach preschoolers in Sunday School, but hopefully these tips have helped inspire you to try something new in your class.
