How to Teach Some Words to ESL Students

Some Helpful Poems for English as a Second Language

Harriet Steinberg
The following are some examples of words with different tenses:

develop, develops, developing, developed

I planted a seed
It developed into a flower.
When I saw it grow
It gave me such power.

When I saw it developing
It made me sing.
It developed so nicely
I felt like a king.

disapprove - the teacher can demonstrate this word by having a puppet point to something that it disapproves of such as a messy bookcase or a dirty desk.

I don't like your dress
You look like such a mess.
The color is so bad
It makes you look sad.

circle, circles, circled, circling

I drew a circle on the board
It's not money so this I can afford.
Two circles I will draw
Let's say hurrah, hurrah.

I'm circling and circling
around the room.
while I'm holding
my big, big broom.

Yesterday I circled around
my yard
I had so much fun
It wasn't hard.

"hang out," 'hung out,"
This can be explained to students, especially high school students that this word is a slang commonly used by teenagers.

Yesterday my friends "hung out"
at my house.
We were so quiet
as quiet as a mouse.

We had such a great time
let's hang out again
at a shopping mall
our group of ten.

The teacher can also tell her/his students that kids refer a popular place as a "hang out."
Teachers can have their students make up little poems, using the new words they learned. They can make Little booklets and illustrate each poem. It will help them to learn their new language. There are ESL books that teachers can find in the library or check the search engine.

Songs and poems both help kids learn more because it seems more like fun than work. Remember the success of the old "Schoolhouse Rock" cartoons on ABC Saturday Mornings?

This is a great way to learn by rote... in songs and in poetry.

I would hate to have to learn English as a foreign language... it's so unpredictable. Good job making the process more enjoyable!

I really related to this one, having to teach our adopted son English. These techniques would have helped :)
