Practice makes perfect when teaching a toddler the days of the week. Everything that a toddler learns is in steps and you should keep this in mind when teaching them anything. Before beginning the lessons you should take cues from your child and not try to study while your child is sleepy or hungry since they will not be as productive. I also do not recommend doing this for more than an hour each day and less if you can since their attention spans are not that long.
One of my favorite ways to inspire little kids to learn the days of the week is to teach them through song. A song that I had learned while volunteering at my daughter's kindergarten class is singing the days of the week to the beat of the Adam's Family. Down below you will see how this song goes; where it says snap, you need to snap your fingers along with your child.
"Snap, snap"
The days of the week.
"Snap, snap."
The days of the week.
There's Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sat-ur-day. "Snap, snap."
There are many tools that you can use such as banners with the days of the week on them. I recommend these banners since you will be able to hang them up in their rooms for them to see and be able to practice with them.
It is better to begin by practicing them one at a time. I started out by teaching my children the first day of the week which is Sunday in the United States. Each day I would go down the list and say each one and then have them to repeat me. During the day I would often say that today is Sunday so we are going to church. Since Sunday is often associated with church they new that it was Sunday. On the following day I would say something like; today school begins again so today is Monday and so on.
During the day you should repeat the days of the week so that they can hear you say them. I don't drill things into my children's heads but instead I make it fun for them by singing made up songs about the days of the week.
Keep going and don't get frustrated if they don't seem to get it at first. Learning something new takes time. I try to teach my kids one thing at a time so that they don't only learn it but they remember what they learn.
The days of the week can also be learned by reading them books from the library that focus on the days of the week. There are also many videos and websites that allow you to show them cartoon characters of the days of the week. These are all good and I highly recommend allowing them to view clips of the days of the week that only last about fifteen minutes.
