How Technology and Science Has Made Us Lazy

Billie Presby
Remember those movies that talked about the future and how you wouldn't have to lift a finger to do anything? Well we are almost in the timeline of those movies now. Don't get me wrong, I love this society and I love technology. I doubt I could live without it anymore. But when you sit back and really think, really ponder how things have changed and what we do differently, you see just how lazy we really are now.

Think about diet pills. There is a pill for everything! To curb your appetite, to make your muscles stronger and bigger, to make you loose water weight. What happened to eating healthy, working out, and just not making a pig of yourself? Do we have so little self control of what we eat that we need a pill to make us not feel hungry? And some people have problems with be hooked on diet pills. Why, do they like not eating? Honey, there is only so much weight you can loose! Just another item that has made us lazy.

When you were in school the ideal place for information was the library. How often do you think people go to the library to learn something and actually open a book? Why would you need to when everything you need is online. Yes it is very convenient, and I love the internet, but I also love to read. Some may argue they are still reading online, which is true. But how did they find the information they are reading. By putting in a few search words and bringing up just what they are looking for. With a book you actually have to read it to get what you want. Thus, expanding your knowledge on another subject that may help you in the future.

From online banking to internet shipping to paying your bills online, why do you even need to leave the house, never less walk to the mail box to mail something. Everything you need is right there! You don't even have to get dressed. But what about sunshine, social interaction, wearing those nice clothes you bought online somewhere other then your bedroom? Another way we have become lazy. Not that I am bashing it! I love paying my bills online and shopping without the crowds and lines is awesome. Do I sound like a hypocrite yet?

Cell phone, dishwashers, automatic shower cleaners, Tivo, just to name a few of the things we have fallen into in this time. Science and technology has furthered us so much that we only need push a few buttons to get it to work. Pretty soon it will be so you just think something and it happens. Might as well become a big fat blob, unless you sit with your diet pill while you shop online and check to see if you have enough money in your bank account while doing your homework and your favorite show is being recorded and when you may feel like you have enough strength to get up and take a shower, it will be squeaky clean!

Technology is a good thing, but we as a society have taken it too far. We are dependent on it to fix simple things that we can do ourselves.
